C.S. Lewis Daily - Today's Reading

Presented by Bible Gateway
Today's Reading

IN PRAISE OF SOLID PEOPLE

Thank God that there are solid folk

Who water flowers and roll the lawn,

And sit and sew and talk and smoke,

And snore all through the summer dawn.

Who pass untroubled nights and days

Full-fed and sleepily content,

Rejoicing in each other’s praise,

Respectable and innocent.

Who feel the things that all men feel,

And think in well-worn grooves of thought,

Whose honest spirits never reel

Before man’s mystery, overwrought.

O happy people! I have seen

No verse yet written in your praise,

And, truth to tell, the time has been

I would have scorned your easy ways.

Then I do envy solid folk

Who sit of evenings by the fire,

After their work and doze and smoke,

And are not fretted by desire.

SOUTHERN HEIGHTS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, LINCOLN, NEBRASKA - It was just another Sunday morning for many in this Lincoln, Nebraska, congregation. But for little Kenny, this Lord’s Day was very different. For the first time in his young life, he wasn’t distracted by noise or movements around him. He folded his hands in prayer as the other worshippers did and followed along with the unison prayer. He did so because the church’s new bulletin featured icons at each part of the service, indicating what to do.

Kenny is autistic. ...

YOUNG ADULT VOLUNTEERS - “You won’t go to India to do something an Indian cannot do,” the Rev. Thomas John told me. He was the site coordinator for the Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program in India, and I was a college senior, interviewing to serve as a YAV on the other side of the globe. I don’t think I had any delusions of single-handedly transforming the world, but I was surely guided by a desire to help, to contribute and to be of service. That was in 2002. Today I serve as site coordinator for the YAV program in Colombia, and I encounter those same motivations again and again in current applicants. ...

Rich Lopez, Reporter
Midland Reporter-Telegram

MIDLAND/ODESSA, TEXAS - The road to Rock the Desert 2018: No Fear has been a bumpy one recently for Alive City -- most notably for singer and songwriter Zachary Schosseau. A hiking trip gone awry led him closer than he should have been to Mount Rushmore. After a fine and detainment by the authorities, he and the band are back on track.

“I haven’t been on a hike and I wanted a to see it a bit closer,” he said in a phone interview. “I was going for a picture and it turned out to be federal property. I had no idea it would turn out that way.”

But the bump hasn’t stopped or even derailed the band’s momentum after winning the Christian Festival Association’s talent search competition in 2017. Now they are on bills and lineups with contemporary Christian music heavyweights such as For King and Country, Tenth Avenue North and Matthew West. At this weekend’s Rock the Desert, Alive City’s Friday night billing has them sharing the stage with We Are Messengers, Family Force Five and Switchfoot. In short, the young band is getting a fast education in music ...
