MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY
Tim Exley
Volunteer, Georgia

"Some friends play at friendship but a true friend sticks closer than one’s nearest kin.” Proverbs 18:24

During my 10 years of traveling to Africa with MMM, one of the greatest gifts I have received is the friendships I have made with the MMM folks there. They are like family joined by a common bond and love for others. One of the things I look forward to most is not only seeing them, but sharing what has been happening with our families.

I had the priviledge of meeting Rev. Mwasakifwa in Tanzania in 2007. There was an immediate bond. Going back was something I always looked forward to because I knew I was going to see him and most likely his family, too. I have watched his children grow up, I’ve eaten in his home, and shared the joy of seeing so many wells installed over the years. It was very special when I got to host him in my home during one of his trips to the U.S., and he got to meet my family.

Not getting to go to Africa in 2019 because of a personal health issue, and then not being able to go in 2020 and now 2021 because of Covid-19 has been very difficult. At my age I don’t know how many more years I will be able to go, but it will be very difficult when I can’t. Not being able to see and work with the many MMM folks I have gotten to know in Africa will create a tremendous void in my life. And the same holds true for the Logans and the many U.S. volunteers I have gotten to know over the years.

And let us not forget the many people “behind the scenes” who support Marion financially and pray for everyone in the program. Although we may never meet them face to face, they are friends and family and key to Marion’s mission.

I truly believe that creating these friendships and bonds is part of the mission of MMM. I guess you could call it a mission of presence. You can truly say we are friends and members of God’s family.

Application Question: How can we support one another beyond the ways Marion brings us together?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we pray that you will continue to support your family here on earth and draw us closer to love one another. We pray this in Your Son’s name. Amen.

IT IS BETTER TO OBEY
Watson Kapachika
MMM Field Officer, Malawi

"Obey the Lord your God and all those blessings will be yours. The Lord will bless your town and your fields." Deuteronomy 28:2-3

This is exactly what the Lord our heavenly father is doing for those who are obedient to him. We have seen other towns being beautiful and wonderful, and many people have wealth in those blessed towns. Abundant farm products being harvested year after year. Producing a lot of graduates and intelligent people with skills that overshadow other people, why? The answer is God’s blessings will be yours.

1 Samuel 15:22 “it is better to obey him (God) than to sacrifice the best sheep to him”. Verse 23 “rebellion against him is as bad as witchcraft and arrogance is as sinful as idolatry.”

Let our God keep on blessing those our brothers and sisters in America who follow the second commandment “love your neighbor as you love yourself” Mark 12:31. You have done it. You are doing this by providing clean water to your African neighbors in Malawi, Zambia, and Tanzania through the MMM Well Program.

We request our Lord to uphold your faith and get more blessings year in and out. As we approach installation and dedication of new wells. Amen

Application Question: Why does the Lord bless your town and your fields?

Prayer: Thank you Lord for abundant blessings which you have showered on us, hence we promise to keep on obeying your commandments.

WHY GO?
Jamie Jones
Volunteer, Georgia

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations." Matthew 28:18-20

When I have shared my “mission experiences” with churched and unchurched alike I’m mostly met with enthusiastic support. However, a few folks have pushed back in disapproval saying that we have enough problems to solve in our own county, state, and country.

To this I offer the Great Commission. Christ tells us in Matthew 28: 18-20, “... therefore go and make disciples of all nations ...”

Even though that “marching order” should be enough justification, I believe there is more to it. Being face to face with the people we share the Good News and good works with is a key part of following that commission.

I have been told how much it means to actually see fellow believers who have taken the time ( and expense!) to travel to be with them in person. To be face to face representatives of people who pray for them and support them monetarily, has been a common theme among people in four very different counties; Mexico (Yucatán), Haiti, Kenya, and Malawi. In one week or three weeks a relationship is formed and the bond is strong!

In each location the people we “help” can do ALL of the projects without us; our MMM staff have proven time and again that they accomplish the work on their own. Even before Covid the staff completed and even exceeded the yearly goal and during Covid they got everything done - and more!

Why go? To share the love of Christ in a personal and deep way, working together physically, sharing our faith, breaking bread together (literally!), and praying together many times on a daily basis.

Application Question: How do you share the love of Christ with others?

Prayer: : Utufuku kwa Mungu! Uchindami kwa Chiuta! Ulemu kwa Mulungu!

INNER SPRING
Reverend Dick McFarlin
Volunteer, Texas

"… but those who drink of the water I give them will never be thirsty. The water I give them will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life." John 4:14

As our team arrived at a village to complete a well, we were warmly greeted by a 16- year-old girl named Memory, who steadied her limping grandmother. I asked if we might pray for grandmother’s (arthritic) knee before continuing to the well site. They said “Yes!” (Grandma spoke with her eyes!)br />
We had prayer together and walked a short distance to find that the team had already begun the pump installation. When it was time for the dedication prayer, I noticed that the village headman had removed his shoes to symbolize that we were on holy ground.br />
Following the well dedication/celebration, Memory invited our team to stay and share a lunch of nsima and beans with her family in their home. After lunch we walked toward our truck when over my shoulder I heard the whole family singing. I turned and noticed that they were also dancing—including grandmother! The song was translated as “We have seen the love of God!”br />
I wondered how it could be that there was such joy and gratitude among people who lived with very little, materially speaking. I remembered the story of the Samaritan woman at the well and how Jesus promised that those who would drink of the water he would give them would never be thirsty. They would have an inner spring!br />
I thought about the variety of water containers I had seen at village well sites: buckets, jugs, gourds, watering cans. And then it hit me. Water takes the shape of its container! When you drink of the flow from Christ’s inner spring, His life comes inside you. You wake up inside your life. And Christ looks like you and everyone else who has tasted the “living water” of Christ’s Spirit!

Application Question: Where is the inner spring welling up in my life? When and where and with whom do I experience its flow?

Prayer: Fill my heart, O God until my eyes overflow. Let me marinate in Your fullness!

WE KNOW IT IS JESUS
Reverend Marlin Otte
Volunteer and MMM Vice President, Illinois

"Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. He said to them, “Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn.” John 21:4, 6, 11

The full text, John 21:1-14, now has added significance for me beyond the great good news of Jesus’ resurrection! The unexpected abundance of fish caught that day numbered 153 - the same number of people that Pastor Ed Evans and I baptized at one service in 1996! There were so many we ran out of water several times! We too were amazed! In 1996 MMM installed 56 wells in a 5-week period. We were amazed by this number as the previous best year was 1995 at 41 wells.

“They did not know that it was Jesus.” Peter and the disciples had set out on their own to go fishing. Who knows what their expectations were? 10, 25, 50 fish? Certainly, it was not an overflowing 153 large fish in one netting! Why the low expectation? Because they did not know Jesus was fishing with them - from the shore! When one goes with Jesus, be prepared for miracles and to have your expectations exceeded! That is certainly the lesson we at MMM have learned. We set our goals, we calculate our possibilities and year after year we are amazed! In 1996, 56 wells seemed miraculous and for then it was. In 2020, when no American volunteers could go to Africa, we boldly (foolishly?) set our goal in faith at 3,000 wells. But our net overflowed! MMM’s African workers installed 3,172 wells in the middle of a pandemic! As we put on every well we install: “Glory to God!” When we acknowledge and give glory to Jesus, the results will always be blessed. We at MMM seek to always “know that it was Jesus” that brings us our success. MMM’s Statement of Purpose includes: We operate from a position of joy. Having personally witnessed the miracle of God’s blessings throughout our history and having experienced the wonder of being involved in the impossible; we continually marvel and rejoice at God’s presence in the work of MMM.

Application Question: How will I “know it was Jesus” today?

Prayer: Dear Jesus, may we always recognize that you are present and guiding MMM’s goals and actions, even when you are not readily evident in our limited sight. We thank you for the abundance of your blessing and pray with confidence for your continued providence. In the name of our resurrected Jesus we pray, Amen!

PEACE & GLOBAL WITNESS OFFERING/WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY - “May the God of Peace … grant you peace at all times in all ways.”

It was a daring prayer, all things considered, to ask the Thessalonians to pray — and it is also a daring one for us, I imagine. The second letter to the Thessalonians arrived at a time of turmoil, strife and confusion. The Christian community was experiencing persecutions so severe that some believed the time of judgment had come, while others took advantage of their doubt, spreading misinformation and sowing dissent. The letter ends with a benedictory prayer: for God’s peace to be granted at all times in all ways. It might have been daring enough to consider asking them to imagine peace at “any time,” much less at “all times,” or to imagine peace in some sort of way at all, much less in all of them. Have you ever felt so far from God’s peace that you couldn’t even imagine it? ...

PERSEVERANCE
Karen Dragano
Volunteer, Colorado

"Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial …" James 1:12

To persevere is to endure hardships, to deal with obstacles, to stay steadfast as you keep moving towards the goal. Persevering is hard! Everyone involved with MMM wells must persevere! There are plenty of trials and obstacles to overcome.

Picture the villagers digging that 15-20 foot hole. Picture them convincing the whole village to commit to this project. What about the doubters?

Picture the Field Officers doing tasks the volunteers used to do. Picture installations that don’t go smoothly, or where there isn’t enough water. Picture the maintenance men who ride bikes long distances to repair wells quickly when a problem arises.

Picture the volunteers who long to be at the wells, but are prevented by Covid .Picture them searching for ways to tell the MMM story and raise money for wells.

Picture the donors who don’t have a lot of money, but want to help. Picture their decision about giving up something else to contribute to a well.

Why do we persevere?? It’s because we want the blessing! The villagers want the blessing of health and strength that comes with safe water. The Field Officers and maintenance men want the blessing of helping their countrymen to a better life. The volunteers and donors want the blessing of reaching out a hand to brothers and sisters from the other side of the world. We all want the blessing of seeing children grow up with strong bodies and minds. We all want the blessing of being used by God to accomplish this miracle of safe drinking water.

Love always perseveres (1 Corinthians 13:7). The root of perseverance is love of God and our neighbor. So we encourage and support each other. We persevere through prayer and God strengthens us and shows us the way. As Tom Logan says, it is only together that we can bring that safe water that is life to the people who need it most!

Application Question: What are the obstacles you are facing ? How will you persevere today?

Prayer: : Oh God who never gives up on us, guide me to persevere in doing your will. Connect all of us so that together we can persevere and accomplish the impossible.

"I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance, in all its fullness." John 10:10

We are what we speak. The more we speak much of negative things the more negativity rings all around our thoughts. Like the saying goes, the world is like a mirror, when you smile it smiles back at you. The more you talk about love increases the ability to love in your life.

We all need to learn this reality of life. Love the life you have, never compare yourself to others. Learn to be contented with what you have and love everything except evil. If you don’t like something, change it if you can. If you don’t like your current job, change it for another one. In the same way if you don’t like your location now move to another neighborhood. However realize there are some things you can’t change. If you don’t like the weather, realize you can’t change so you just need to change your attitude. As Reinhold Niebuhr said: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.”

The more you are filled with positivity and loving thoughts the more you will speak positivity and loving words; hence, the happier you will be with your life.

Application Question: Do I love everyone in my life, even my enemies?

Prayer: : Lord, help me develop the spirit of loving everything and everyone in my life for that’s the best for me at a particular time. Help me move in the track you enlighten me to pass through by every step I take in this life. Let my happiness bring light and to brighten the dark moments of my life as well as of others in Jesus’ name, Amen.
