MINUTE FOR MISSION: CRIMINAL JUSTICE - On one of our first dates, my wife and I passed a man in a baseball cap who was hanging out on the corner, smoking. As we got closer, he looked up. I assumed that he was going to ask for money, so I felt around in my pocket for some loose change.

But he surprised me. He didn’t want money; he wanted to thank me for visiting him in jail. The last time I had seen him, he was wearing a red prison jumpsuit. Out of context, he looked so different that I hadn’t recognized him. It was wonderful to see him out of jail. He told us how God was moving in his life. We wished him peace and said goodbye.

Upward Devotional for January 25, 2014

Saturdays this time of year find me working the floor of the gymnasiums at our church in Midland, and at the high school across the street, offering halftime devotionals during Upward Basketball games.

Saturday, January 25, 2014

Good afternoon, everyone, and thank you so much for being here today, rooting for your kiddos, and all the youngsters on the court  ... another good day of Upward Sports here in Midland.

Sports ... a lot of sports stories in the news lately ... did anybody see Carmelo Anthony score SIXTY-TWO points for the Knicks last night? WHEW!

And the Olympics ... In less than two weeks, the finest young athletes in the world arrive in the Russian city of Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Lots of headlines devoted to the local and national competitions, determining who will - and will NOT - be representing their country in Sochi.

Unfortunately, there are a LOT of other headlines about the Olympics devoted to security, and threats of terrorism, and the fear generated by those threats ... sometimes, that's the first thing we hear on the evening news, when their focus shifts to the Olympics.

And there is cause for concern ... threats have been made. And it wouldn't be the first time something like this happened ... I'm old enough, and some of you are old enough - to remember the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

And, really, you don't have to go to the other side of the world for troubling news. Is it me, or is the local news filling more and more with stories of crime, and auto accidents, and fires, and hardship?

It's not a bad world we live in ... it's a good world ... BUT, it's a good world where bad things happen, and who can blame people for being afraid? I know this ... and you know what? God knows this. When our minds and our hearts are troubled by the bad things going on around us, when we're afraid, God has our back ...

In the Book of Isaiah, we read "Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous hand.’"

And remember ... GOOD things happen, too. There are a lot of good people, and a lot of good things happening under this roof, right here, right now. Let us all look for ways to do good, and to encourage others to do good, around the world and right here at home.

(prayer)

Thank you everyone ... enjoy the game!

Upward Sports, by the way, is one of the the world’s largest Christian sports program for children, and was created with a vision to provide the best sports experience possible for every child. An estimated 1-million people around the world play, coach, referee or volunteer in some way to support Upward sports activities, hosted by more than 2,600 churches - there are four churches here, in Midland, including my own First Presbyterian

The organization notes that, "anyone – children and volunteers of any faith or no faith – can participate in Upward Sports. Specifically designed for children in K5- sixth grade, Upward aims to bring out 'the winner' in every child – regardless of the game’s score."

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS - Growing up in a family of 11 children, Bishop Michael Pfeifer, of the Catholic Diocese of San Angelo, said he has always had a strong Catholic faith.

“We were nine girls and two poor boys,” he said with a chuckle, recalling his childhood. “By the time I was born, two of my sisters had died, so I was surrounded by seven sisters. We didn’t have too much in the line of material possessions, but we had enough, thank God.”

Pfeifer, who submitted his letter of resignation upon his 75th birthday in May 2012, as is required of all Catholic priests, will officially retire upon the installation of his successor Monday. The bishop-elect is Monsignor Michael Sis, currently serving as vicar general of the Catholic Diocese of Austin.

Sis’s ordination and installation Mass will take place at 2 p.m. Monday at The Junell Center at Angelo State University in San Angelo.

PRESBYTERY OF LOS RANCHOS, CALIFORNIA - How many college freshmen get up early during Thanksgiving break for coffee with their mom and pastor? Add one to the list: Andrew Manos.

The meeting was to plan the very first community service project of Canvas—a new congregation launched by Irvine Presbyterian Church in an effort to engage the non- and dechurched with the gospel. The vision was simple: encourage people to take initiative, dream of the good they want to do, and do it in a way that those outside the church could share. But, as often happens with experienced leaders, ideas began to drift toward the tried and true: “Perhaps a toy drive?”

The next day Andrew called me: “I want to throw a pancake breakfast for my friends. I’ll make the food, then we all will head to the store to buy toys for KidWorks [a local nonprofit in need].”

EDITOR'S NOTE ... A little off the beaten path here with a report on news far, FAR removed from West Texas ... but very, VERY close to the Cristian heart!

Orthodox priests in Ukraine step into line of fire to stop deadly protests

By Carol Kuruvilla
New York Daily News

KIEV, UKRAINE - Holy nerves of steel. A group of Orthodox priests stepped right into the line of fire to stop clashes between protesters and police in Ukraine.

The priests braved bullets and walked into no-man’s land between pro-European Union integration protesters and President Viktor Yanukovych’s riot police. ‘I’m here to placate the violence,’ an Orthodox priest said.

HANMI PRESBYTERY - New Praise Church, one of the 23 congregations of Hanmi Presbytery, began in 2012 when two churches merged. While each congregation had been surviving separately, hardship prevented them from effectively executing their missions on their own.

The church’s name, which was decided by a contest, was offered by the youth and college group drawn from each congregation. Deferring to the guidance of young people is unusual in the context of adult-centered Korean immigrant churches.

Faces of Children: Prayer Concerns for This Week

Faces of Children is an ecumenical prayer ministry under the auspices of First Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas. Our mission is to initiate ministries of prayer for children in churches, communities, and neighborhoods. In doing so, we seek to provide an opportunity for people of God to join together, learn about children and their needs throughout the world, and celebrate Christ's love (especially as it relates to children).

Prayer Concerns for the Week of 01/22/14

Colombia

Please pray for girls and boys who have been lured by false promises into Colombia’s largest rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). This formerly agrarian movement is now heavily involved in cocaine trafficking, kidnapping, and extortion. Pray for poor girls and young women who are easy targets for recruitment into the FARC because of high levels of sexual abuse and domestic violence in their home lives.
Pray for women and girls in the FARC who have had their newborn babies taken away from them and then killed. Pray for girls and women who’ve experienced forced miscarriages. Having babies is forbidden in the FARC.
Pray for girls who are forced to serve as sex slaves for commanders and for those who must fight on the frontlines. Pray for those who have to prepare and serve meals, haul firewood, stand guard, dig trenches and latrines, gather intelligence, and recruit other children to fight.
Give thanks to God for the government program that helps former rebels reintegrate into civilian life. Pray for former child soldiers who experienced great cruelty while in the FARC.
Pray for an end to this 50-year-old war between the FARC and the Columbian military. Pray the peace talks in Havana will bear fruit and end this conflict in which 220,000 people have been killed and almost 5 million displaced.

Haiti

Please continue to pray for the 170,000 children, youth, and adults of Haiti who are still homeless four years after a massive earthquake rocked this impoverished country. Pray for those living in approximately 300 temporary tent settlements in and around Port-au-Prince where they have little or no access to safe drinking water or toilets.
Pray for children who have become ill with a water-borne disease (like cholera) and for those at risk of getting one because of the poor sanitation in these settlements. Pray for children and families living in flimsy shelters in these makeshift camps as they are very vulnerable to flooding during the hurricane season.
Please pray for the estimated 78,000 homeless Haitians who are at great risk of being forcibly evicted from the tent settlements in which they are living because land owners want to reclaim their land. Pray for those who have been forced out of their temporary shelters and have no other options available to them.
Give God thanks for a rental subsidy program that’s helped more than 55,000 people relocate from the tent settlements into housing of their choice. Pray government and international aid agencies’ programs that help homeless families move into safe housing will overcome the challenges posed by corruption, political uncertainty, poor coordination, land tenure problems, and a cholera epidemic .

Tonga

Keep in prayer the children and people of the South Pacific island nation of Tonga who were affected by Cyclone Ian. This category five tropical storm destroyed an estimated 90 percent of the homes on the northern Ha’apai Islands chain.

more on this request
Pray for those on the Ha’apai outer islands of Foa, Ha’ano, and Mo’unga’one where there was 90 percent destruction. And pray for those in Pangai, the capital of Ha’apai, where there was about 80 percent destruction.
Please pray emergency relief teams will reach everyone in need on these northern islands. Pray God will provide those affected by this massive storm with the resources they need to make shelters and begin again. Pray they will have access to safe water as most homes relied on rooftop water collection systems which were probably destroyed in the cyclone.

United States

Please keep 17-year-old Kailey close in prayer during a difficult season in her life. Kailey is struggling in high school with classes and friendships. Pray she will seek comfort from God in this challenging time in her life.
Continue to pray for 14-year-old Dallas who recently ran away from home with his mother’s 37-year-old “boyfriend” who has a criminal record. Give God thanks this man turned himself into police ... he didn’t want to be arrested on charges of kidnapping.
more on this request
o Pray Dallas will come out of hiding and seek help. He’s thought to be staying with friends and Dallas’ mother believes her boyfriend may have introduced Dallas to drugs.
o Please pray for this family as they continue to struggle with the consequences of poor life choices. Pray Betty can maintain her sobriety throughout this challenging season.

Faces of Children

Please continue to pray that more churches and individuals will join with the ministry of Faces of Children in spreading awareness about children in crisis and inviting more people to pray for children at risk.

If you have prayer requests about children, those who care for them, those who have authority over them, or those who harm them (the really hard prayers to say sometimes), please send them to Chris Laufer, FOC Coordinator, at claufer@facesofchildren.net

MIDLAND, TEXAS - Home-cooked comfort food, caring fellowship and heartfelt prayer are the key ingredients in Kreations by Kimberly, LLC, a local cooking ministry run by Midland woman Kimberly Meyers.

Every week, the former-nurse-turned-chef creates homemade dishes in her licensed kitchen at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church. A special dish is featured every week, usually a casserole, soup, dip, side dish or dessert. Customers place their orders via email, and Meyers prepares and freezes the items for easy thawing and re-heating at home.

SYNOD OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND HAWAII - The 289 congregations of the Synod of Southern California and Hawaii are taking seriously the denomination’s emphasis on forming 1,001 new worshiping communities. They are reaching out to the unchurched and to those wounded by prior church experiences, a large group of people who are sometimes called “spiritually hungry but institutionally suspicious.”

ServLife International: Restoration and Reflection, from the Office

ServLife International is a movement defined by values of God’s kingdom, not programs built around human efforts and activities. The reign and rule of God should be made apparent to every person on the planet, despite their religion, race or socioeconomic status. We believe that issues of justice are inseparable from the good news that Jesus Christ came to proclaim. ServLife exists to take the gospel of Christ and the hope of a better, more just, world to the lives of people we touch. This happens through individual contributions of time, creativity, resources and dreams.

Restoration and Reflection, from the Office

2013 has been truly amazing for ServLife. We've seen God do some incredible things, both in the U.S. and overseas. Lives have been transformed by God's grace, children have been rescued from heart-wrenching circumstances and families have broken the shackles of poverty ...

Multiplying Light

Psalm 80:19 speaks to our brokenness and desperation, God's mighty power, and the accessible light of salvation:

"Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved."

Restoration and salvation comes from God alone. But it does not come to me alone. It comes to us. To humankind. To God's children. To all of us that would turn to Jesus. And this restoration does not end with us; it multiplies.

We receive the light and salvation from God, and are then commissioned to shine His light so that all people will see Jesus. The "we," the "us," continues to expand as restoration and the warmth of God's light and love washes over our lives, our homes, our cities, our entire world.

Your investment in India and Nepal is continuing to enlarge God's community and show his light and love. You are providing warm homes for children rescued from the street. You are illuminating hearts with the hope of the Gospel. You are bringing restoration and respect to those previously living in extreme poverty. I am so encouraged by your generosity and support. Thank you.

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)

MIDLAND, TEXAS - "I got the crusading bug and decided I'd go out and help homeless people and the fact is, I ended up homeless myself."

Larry was a registered nurse for 18 years. A couple years ago, he gave up his career to help homeless people. It wasn't long before he'd used up his entire life savings on his mini-crusade.

"I found myself on the street with just the clothes on my back. I was living under a tarp," says Larry.

One day in May, he stumbled upon Church Under the Bridge ... he admits, at first, he just came for the food.

PRESBYTERY OF TROPICAL FLORIDA - hen disaster hits, you first have to endure the shock, but eventually you have to rebuild. The Presbytery of Tropical Florida experienced trauma when nine beloved churches and several integral leaders left under a separation policy. There was a deep sense of being pruned and a concern that we would not recover. That was a year ago.

Like the pruned vine or fruit tree, our branches have begun to blossom and we are beginning to produce fruit. This growth is occurring across the seven counties of southeast Florida. It is a result of the presbytery investing in things that build up and support congregations and of congregations looking outward to their neighborhoods and communities.

The presbytery has invested in sending people to conferences that address a specific ministry, such as stewardship, children, or worship. Attendees then organize workshops to help elders, staff, and members learn new ideas and rethink their current programs.

Word from Uganda: "An African Day"

Missionary teacher Natalie Rolfe writes, "'When He calls me, I will answer ... I'll be somewhere working for my Lord.' My call was Mbale, Uganda and that is where I have returned to serve for another year. Specifically, I am teaching phonics at Lulwanda Children's Home, an orphanage and school for 90 kids." Natalie also keeps an online journal of her service at the weblog, When He calls me, I will answer ...

An African Day

My daytime gatekeeper/gardener had his traditional "Introduction Ceremony" last month. I was glad to be among his family and friends that escorted him to his lady's home village to be official "introduced" to her family.

O, yes!! All we have to do ...

Living love is a complicated, painstaking, patient path.
An all-the-time, every time, watch-where-you’re-going way.
Living love means making decisions all day long to love,
Living love means patience with those who don’t care about living love,
Living love means watching our words as well as our actions,
Living love means treating others as we ourselves want to be treated.

Living love means not hitting back,
Living love means loving our enemies,
Living love means loving those who speak all manner of evil against us.
And these things are just the beginnings of living Love.
Living Love means forgiving, means forgetting,
Living Love means there is no room for self-righteousness,
Living Love means being the people of God together,
a community of those who love one another

Living Love means understanding those who hate.

Living Love means going into all the world and telling God’s story.
He said God is Love
He said I am the Way.
He said I am Truth.
He said I am Life.
He said Follow me.
If we have the eyes to see
And the ears to hear
Life Abundant is ours.

ODESSA, TEXAS -A new structure appeared unannounced on the south side of Highway 191 near the Midland and Ector county line.

It is a giant cross, about 40 feet tall. It is made of cypress, and it lights up at night. Five pieces of granite sit beside. Bible verses are inscribed on four, and on the fifth, the Ten Commandments. There is also a small parking lot.

People wondered. Some called the newspaper wondering if there was a new church under way that just hadn’t been announced yet. There is not.

So who built the cross, which lit up for the first time in the past week?

TRINITY PRESBYTERY OF SOUTH CAROLINA - Downtown Church is a new community of faith in the center of Columbia. This new church development of Trinity Presbytery is not looking to own a traditional church building; rather, it meets in a renovated community center that served the people of a mill area in this university city more than a century ago.

Pastor Amos Disasa emigrated from Ethiopia to Columbia over 30 years ago and now leads this community filled with folks from across the city and the globe. During worship, you may sit beside a native Columbian or a student from Ghana or China.

While Downtown Church explores unique and creative ways of doing church, it has no intention of dismissing the ancient and timeless practices of faith, which it believes are still around for a reason. It has merged the old and new to create a beautiful, blended way to experience God.

FPC-Midland Belize Mission: Looking Out Windows on the Way Home

From  January 4-11, 2014, a team  from 1st Presbyterian Church-Midland will be traveling to the Central American country of Belize, and working with The Word at Work ministry. This will be an opportunity to reach out and share the gospel with the people of Belize while working side-by-side with the local community and The Word at Work staff on a much-needed construction project.

Looking Out Windows on the Way Home

Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport, Belize: The flight that will take us back to the U.S.
That short-but-busy final day in Belize that I mentioned in a previous post, has drawn to an end as we check-in our bags at the airport outside Belize City ... and where our team for this past week begins to break up. After saying 'goodbye' to us The Word At Work staffers Tim Tam and Kenny Logan will greet another mission team arriving from the United States, aboard the same jet that will refuel, replenish and head back to the U.S. with our team aboard.

It is also here that we bid a brief farewell to the Thompson family - Mayra,  Zureyma and
Walter  - who will be taking a separate flight out of Belize, later that day, and arriving in Midland tomorrow.
One last look at Belize as we head north
The American Airlines flight that takes us to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, is on-time and problem-free. In a previous post, I offered a shout-out to team co-leader Karen Winkler for her work on the the 'logistics' of this trip, and I offer that shout-out once again. On our arrival at DFW, we say goodbye to Casey and Will Smith, who will spend some time in the area before returning to Midland.

And at last, we're home! It's been a good trip and a great mission. I'm hoping to encourage other members of the team to send me their thoughts on the past week, which I will then share with you on the blog. We also plan to make a 'report' at First-Prez Midland in the near future. As soon as I have the details on that, I will share those with you.

FPC-Midland Belize Mission: A Stitch in time, and Hope

From  January 4-11, 2014, a team  from 1st Presbyterian Church-Midland will be traveling to the Central American country of Belize, and working with The Word at Work ministry. This will be an opportunity to reach out and share the gospel with the people of Belize while working side-by-side with the local community and The Word at Work staff on a much-needed construction project.

A Stitch in time, and Hope

Our final day in Belize was a relatively short one, but full and busy nonetheless. With a mid-afternoon departure from the airport at Belize City, we had time to go into the city itself, meet some more people, witness some more mission at work, and establish some more relationships.

This included a visit to Christian Sewing Partners of Belize, created to improve the lives of women through sewing and related skill development. Their mission ... combining spiritual and skill development to increase capacity of participating women:
• To initiate, manage and develop sewing and related arts
• Create alternative income generating projects
• Increase income for self and families
• Develop entrepreneurial skills
• Develop markets to expand the options available to women

As explained by our mutual mission partner in Belize, The Word At Work, CSPB trains women and young ladies to sew as a means of generating income, fostering leadership and independence while strengthening each member during the year-long training.  At the end of the year, each student is given the option to purchase a sewing machine at cost to develop their own sewing micro-business.

Recently, CSPB rolled out their label, their brand. Mareshah, which means "Over the Top," is now the brand name for all of their sewn products of Belize - "skillfully crafted with a touch of love."

We got to see some of that work. While no classes were in session during our Saturday visit, the staff was on hand to demonstrate their operations ... and take orders and measurements from team members for personal shirts!

At the same time, members of this year's FPC-Midland Uganda Mission, also discussed an order of shirts from CSPB for that team ... a small windfall and encouragement for our Belize partners, and a touch of love for our 2014 Uganda team.
