FPC-Midland Belize Mission: A Stitch in time, and Hope

From  January 4-11, 2014, a team  from 1st Presbyterian Church-Midland will be traveling to the Central American country of Belize, and working with The Word at Work ministry. This will be an opportunity to reach out and share the gospel with the people of Belize while working side-by-side with the local community and The Word at Work staff on a much-needed construction project.

A Stitch in time, and Hope

Our final day in Belize was a relatively short one, but full and busy nonetheless. With a mid-afternoon departure from the airport at Belize City, we had time to go into the city itself, meet some more people, witness some more mission at work, and establish some more relationships.

This included a visit to Christian Sewing Partners of Belize, created to improve the lives of women through sewing and related skill development. Their mission ... combining spiritual and skill development to increase capacity of participating women:
• To initiate, manage and develop sewing and related arts
• Create alternative income generating projects
• Increase income for self and families
• Develop entrepreneurial skills
• Develop markets to expand the options available to women

As explained by our mutual mission partner in Belize, The Word At Work, CSPB trains women and young ladies to sew as a means of generating income, fostering leadership and independence while strengthening each member during the year-long training.  At the end of the year, each student is given the option to purchase a sewing machine at cost to develop their own sewing micro-business.

Recently, CSPB rolled out their label, their brand. Mareshah, which means "Over the Top," is now the brand name for all of their sewn products of Belize - "skillfully crafted with a touch of love."

We got to see some of that work. While no classes were in session during our Saturday visit, the staff was on hand to demonstrate their operations ... and take orders and measurements from team members for personal shirts!

At the same time, members of this year's FPC-Midland Uganda Mission, also discussed an order of shirts from CSPB for that team ... a small windfall and encouragement for our Belize partners, and a touch of love for our 2014 Uganda team.
