Daily Devotional from @mmm_water ... Do we give thanks in ALL circumstances?

During this trying time - with people are isolated and nervous, perhaps even scared of what is to come - Marion Medical Mission (MMM) thought their supporters might enjoy remembering past miracles and connecting with others to pray for everyone affected by the virus, both here and around the world. They are sending a short devotion each Monday, Wednesday & Friday morning, continuing until quarantine restrictions are lifted. These devotions have been written by volunteers and staff members about their experiences with MMM; each is uplifting, positive and beautifuly written. We think these devotions are timeless and may provide comfort and connection for those who read them and pray with them. If you'd like to be on added to that list, email MMM HERE

Sharing the love of Jesus by providing safe, clean, sustainable sources of drinking water to the extreme poor in sub-Saharan Africa, Marion Medical Mission is one of our mission partners at Grace Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas, and we STRONGLY encourage you to read these devotions to learn more about - and pray for! - their mission.

Giving Thanks to God
Francis Kaponda
Field Officer, Malawi

"Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.” I Thessalonians 5:18

Installation season is here again. The day starts with the sound of a cock in the morning. On our way to field, seeing the men and women carrying hoes on their shoulders tells us we have to get to work. Yes, the installation work with its own ups and downs, the broken bridges, almost tipping, the burning sun, the thirst, cold showers, blackouts and injuries have exposed our inadequacy and His sufficiency for every one of our needs.

God mixes bitter and sweet, in appropriate proportions so that they work together for good. God measures with precision just the right amount of sunshine and rain we can endure. He is with us through it all and that we must allow Him to do the things He sees best for us, like calling volunteers to come to Africa to reach out to the thirsty. While we are in His mission, if we complain about everything, we are complaining against God. If we can just hold on during the storm, there is peace on the other side. We need to realize that as He walked the streets of Galilee, as He healed the sick, He is still doing the same today. With this we should be able to give thanks to God in all circumstances, for this is God's will for us in Christ Jesus.

The volunteers' trip to Africa is God's will and is an answer by the volunteers to the call of God to this mission, so that we do more in our walk with Jesus than just going to church on Sundays. We are called to live our lives for the glory of God. Be proud for being a volunteer in God's mission, you have chosen to live your life for the glory of God. May all the thanks be to the Almighty One in Jesus name.

Application Question: Do we give thanks to God in all circumstances?

Prayer: Dear Lord help us realize your constant presence in our midst regardless of our situation. Cultivate the spiritual riches of Christ which kindle the fire of joy within us so that we may always give thanks to you God, in all our situations. In Jesus mighty name, Amen.

From Outreach Foundation ... Mission Partnership Update

• Outreach welcomes Tharwat Wahba

Beginning today, May 5th, The Outreach Foundation welcomed Dr. Tharwat Wahba as part-time Egypt Mission Consultant, working closely with our staff.

A growing number of congregations in the U.S. are being drawn to what God is doing in Egypt. Outreach has an opportunity to nurture and facilitate the connections between our churches. We are excited about God’s work in Egypt through the church and seminary and look forward to deepening our partnership and exploring new models of shared ministry with Tharwat’s help.

Twenty years ago, when our partners in Egypt were praying for a new leader to shape the church’s mission vision, they turned to one of their own pastors and professors, Tharwat Wahba. After concluding his doctoral studies, he took up his expanded role at the Evangelical Theological Seminary of Cairo (ETSC). He continues to teach mission, evangelism, and church planting. Tharwat has also guided the Synod of the Nile’s church planting work for several years.

Tharwat is married to Ibtesam Adly Girgis, and they have one daughter and two sons.

Engaging followers of Christ for His work in the world, the Outreach Foundation is committed to helping the church live out its missional calling, building the capacity of the global church, especially where the church is vulnerable or growing rapidly, and transforming lives through mission involvement.

I Will Not Forsake Them
Rev. Ed Hoke
Volunteer, Illinois

"I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them, I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do. I will not forsake them.” Isaiah 42:16

We served a local village Parish called Euthini for nine years. From 1997, until the MMM Team led by Jerry Miller came to Euthini, the other women and I had to draw water from either a river or ADMARC Borehole which was a 55 minute walk away from us. Sometimes I had to go early- 2:00 or 3:00 am - so that I could avoid standing in a queue. The pail of water had to be carried on my head always. We felt God's love in action when the Marion Medical Mission team came and installed a well close to CCAP Euthini Station.

You need to read the scripture before you read this meditation. I laughed to myself when I read this passage from Isaiah. What made me laugh was reading this passage in the context of our experience in Africa. Being led in “…ways they have not known,” I am lost half the time I’m there. If it weren’t for the Field Officers and Well Supervisors, they would still be looking for me from three years ago. “I will turn the darkness into light…” That would be real nice when you don’t get back before night fall. And then the topper, “…and make the rough places smooth.” Are you kidding me? There is not a smooth spot on any road off the tarmac.

But seriously, everyone who drives in Africa is led to places they have not known. Our Field Officers and Well Supervisors know where they are going and they’ve never gotten me lost, at least for long. Like them, God already knows where we are going. God knows where the wells of our lives are. God has already been there and prepared for our experience of what is in store in that place. And believe me, there you will find the fresh water that will make you never thirst.

As for making rough places smooth, all I can say is that as a veteran of this project, each year the roads get smoother. Really. My first two years, I got irritated by the roughness of the roads. And then during the third year I noticed that I didn’t mind so much. I knew what to expect and had learned to go with the flow. Again, the more we walk with Christ, the more experience we get and the more faith we have, what seemed rough at first only became the normal life of a Christian. I don’t find anywhere in the New Testament where Jesus promises smooth roads. It is just that with Christ in our lives, it doesn’t seem so rough.

Application Question: Where in your life have the rough places seemed smooth because God is present?

Prayer: Oh God, lead us in ways we have not known, make our darknesses light, and make the rough places in our lives seem smooth, simply because You are there, and we will learn to trust You more. Amen.

Love in Action
Ruth Nyondo
Director of Kileni Schools, Mzuzu, Malawi

"Dear children, Let us not love with words or tongue, but with ACTION and in truth." John 3:18

These verses from 1 John give an example of how to help those in need. Some people are blessed or have everything, but others do not have everything including water. How clearly do your actions say you really love others? Brothers and sisters, are you as generous as you should be with your money, possessions and time?

Finally, out of my experience in a village where people have totally no water, we should always remind each other that Love is a description of the whole Christian life, and this will be seen when others help. Love in action through MMM has saved many souls in Malawi.

Application Question: How will you put Love into Action today?

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, please help us to see the opportunities you give us to Love those in need. Use us to put Your Love into Action. Amen

From Presbyterian Disaster Assistance ... "URGENT: COVID-19 devastation escalates"

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) enables congregations and mission partners of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) to witness to the healing love of Christ through caring for communities adversely affected by crisis and catastrophic event. PDA is the emergency and refugee program of the PC(USA). The core budget, including staff and administrative costs, is funded through the One Great Hour of Sharing, and its program work is additionally funded through designated gifts.

• If you are able, please help us Give, Act and Pray now

Dear Friends in Christ,

You are in my prayers as we navigate the disaster of this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. I know most people are feeling the impact — health-wise, financially, emotionally. Our lives have been turned upside down in the span of just a few short weeks. Please know that the PC(USA) is with you in spirit. With God’s help, we will get through this together.

Every day, I hear stories from around the Church of how people are suffering and how their lives have been devastated. Unemployment, sickness, parents who are thrust into the role of teacher or caregiver, the rise in racism against the Asian community, the amount of deaths, including the disproportionate death rates experienced by people of color and those already living on the margins — all have been catastrophic.

In some communities, churches are barely making ends meet. They’re facing the reality of running out of money. They worry about how they’re going to pay their bills — much less support a pastor or provide critical services in their neighborhoods.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is here to help — again ...

Read the rest of this message, with suggestions on how YOU can help ...

... Thanks in advance for your generosity.

In faith,

The Rev. Dr. Diane Givens Moffett
