MIDLAND, TEXAS - A new shelter for women and children in crisis will open its doors in January.

The Genesis Center of the Permian Basin, a branch of the shelter of the same name in Kaufman, will offer a 12-month residential program and 30-day emergency shelter for women and children affected by domestic violence, sexual abuse, homelessness, drug and alcohol problems, parole situations or other crises.

The 46,000-square-foot shelter is housed at 2800 Louisiana Ave. in what used to be Trinity Presbyterian Church, which closed in June. Genesis Center will accept up to 100 women and children. Currently, 20 women and children are signed up.
