ODESSA, TEXAS - The Jewish festival of Purim is a fun holiday with a deep message, said Rabbi Holly Cohn of Temple Beth El in Odessa. This year, Purim begins Saturday evening and ends Sunday evening.

The story of Purim is told in the book of Esther in the Old Testament. A young Jewish woman named Esther is sent to the king of Persia to become part of his harem without revealing her Jewish identity. She learns that the king’s advisor is plotting to exterminate all the Jewish people, because of his deep-rooted hatred of Esther’s Jewish uncle. Esther is persuaded to speak to the king on behalf of her people, which initially scares her. In the end, she decides it’s important to stand up for her faith and speaks to the king, who intervenes and saves the Jewish people.

The story teaches loyalty to your faith and your people, Cohn said.
