Farmers' Resiliance
Many of the cacao and sugar cooperatives we partner with are located in remote rural areas. We’re inspired by all the creative ways these co-ops have stepped up during the ongoing global pandemic to take care of their communities.

Our partners at ACOPAGRO in Peru put COVID-19 safety protocols in place early this spring, before the pandemic reached their country in a major way. Now, Peru is one of the hardest-hit places in the world. ACOPAGRO members live in the Amazon rainforest, many of them three-and-a-half hours by boat from the nearest large town. That means they’re far from medical facilities and stores where basic supplies are sold. But the co-op has helped provide cacao farmers, staff, and neighbors with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and food kits, using fair trade premium payments to purchase these necessities. Because these farmers are part of an alternative network that stretches across the globe, they have access to information, resources, and markets where they can sell their crop at a fair price. You’re part of that network, too!

Farmers Deserve Fair Pay

Fair pay for farmers is important in an industry where rock-bottom prices often drive labor abuses -- this year more than ever. Equal Exchange sources 100% fair trade cacao and sugar for our chocolate from cooperatives in Peru, the Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Panama, and Togo. Across the board, these democratically organized groups of farmers have proved their resilience through amazing initiatives, from devising social distancing at collection centers to doing community outreach to sugarcane field workers. The chocolate we make together is delicious -- and it’s a meaningful alternative to conventional chocolate this Halloween. and sharing them with your neighbors, friends and family. All three varieties of Organic Chocolate Minis are 15% off through October 23 when you shop on our web store.
