Partners Blog: "Becoming a Refugee"

Steve and Oddny Gumaer started Partners Relief and Development in response to the needs of refugees and displaced people from Burma, and now in the Middle East, as well. Their mission is to demonstrate, through holistic action, God’s love to children and communities made vulnerable by war in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and other conflict zones.

Becoming a Refugee

Imagine that your husband has just been killed and the grief that you feel. Now imagine that pain, but having to pick up your heart and your children and carry on anyway. But carrying on doesn’t just mean living your life in a normal way, but instead making a quick decision to flee, because staying could mean death. In fact it probably means death. So you, your sister and the seven other members of your family take off. You walk and you take a boat and you walk some more, for three hours. Meanwhile your heart is in pain and you feel fear because you don’t know what’s coming next, you don’t have any food and you have only the clothes on your back. You don’t have a passport because you’ve never had a passport. Really, all you have is your life and the lives of those who are with you. Tangibly, it’s not much. And yet, it’s everything, because you have your life and the life of those with you. So you are grateful that you still have your life, and you carry on because you must, and you carry on because your children are depending on you, and you carry on because maybe, maybe, maybe there is hope ...
