From @austinseminary ... "The Reed" for October 2018

• "Building a House United” seeks to bridge political divide

Churches are not immune from the political divides and tribal disagreements that are running rampant across the United States. Churches are struggling just as families, friendships, and perhaps the government are also being challenged. At its best, the church should be a place of resistance to the broader social trend of demonizing those who disagree. Our tradition teaches us that we are called to be "one." That is easeir said than done. In increasing numbers, pastors are talking about the challenges of serving "purple" churches—churches filled with people on both sides of the political divide.

Education Beyond the Walls at Austin Seminary wants to help build bridges within churches. If we can foster the habit of bringing people together across differences within our churches, then perhaps we can influence the broader community to do the same. Building on the successful event following the 2016 presidential election, "Post-election Detox," we are hosting a series of conversations with Rev. Allen Hilton, author of Building a House United: How the Church Can Save the World, with the workshop, "Building a House United," starting October 9.

The two parts of this series (Oct. 9 & Nov. 15, 2018) offer independent, but equally important content. Education Beyond the Walls is a department of Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Education Beyond the Walls (EBW) provides lifelong learning and fresh, innovative, and expansive theological education for clergy, church leaders, congregations, and communities. First five students graduate from Seminary’s Spanish-language Certificado en Ministerio program

Austin Seminary Photo
Five members of Iglesia Cristiana Latina Presbiteriana in Houston recently completed Austin Seminary's Certificado en Ministerio (CEM) program. Isbela C. Mejia, Mary Gonzalez, Norma Luz Gonzalez, Italia Rivera, and Martin Flores received their certificates at New Covenant Presbytery's July stated meeting. Their pastor is Austin Seminary alumna The Reverend Isabel Rivera-Velez (MDiv’10).

Begun in 2015, the CEM offers online courses three times per year, taught in Spanish, on such topics as "Church Planting and Evangelism," "The Latin Church in the Context of the United States," and "Theology and Ethics." To earn the certificate, students must complete a total of seven courses. The CEM program was designed to offer an affordable, engaging basic theological education for leaders in Latinex churches.

We're very proud of this first class of CEM graduates!
