From Austin Seminary: "Honor those who have believed in you!"
• All Saints Remembrance Week, October 25-November 3
"When I received my acceptance letter to Austin Seminary, I called my grandfather to tell him what I was going to do. His response was one of immediate affirmation, saying 'When you get ordained, I will buy you a personalized license plate: REVRUN.' My grandfather died before I was ordained, but his conviction in my call supported me through seminary and the ordination process."
"As you remember those saints who supported you, please consider giving a gift in their memory or honor to Austin Seminary."

From ServLife International ... "From Dreaming to Planning; and Final Days of Matching Grant Fundraiser"
ServLife International is a movement defined by values of God’s kingdom, not programs built around human efforts and activities. The reign and rule of God should be made apparent to every person on the planet, despite their religion, race or socioeconomic status. We believe that issues of justice are inseparable from the good news that Jesus Christ came to proclaim. ServLife exists to take the gospel of Christ and the hope of a better, more just, world to the lives of people we touch. This happens through individual contributions of time, creativity, resources and dreams.
From Dreaming to Planning
Engineering Ministries International works with ministries around the world to design facilities. They graciously sent a volunteer team to Kathmandu in 2019 to help design the new children's home.
Deputy Director Kevin Keiter led the team to "develop from a dream to a set of plans for what this facility design would look like." The team spent time with Udaya and his staff, surveyed the land, met with local officials, and concluded the week with a full presentation of the designs and renderings for the children's home. "Care for the children is very important," Kevin shares. "To see how much they care about these kids was really inspirational to the whole team."
Please click here to give your largest gift ever to double your impact and provide a Forever Home for dozens of orphans in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Please consider giving your largest gift ever by the end of the day tomorrow to have it matched up to $50,000.
As we near the end of the last week of our 100% MATCHED Fall Campaign we're hoping (with your help) to reach our huge goal of $100,000. This $100,000 is the first of a total $480,000 we need to raise to complete the building of the Forever Home. This first milestone will allow us to move forward with breaking ground on the property we have purchased in Kathmandu.
The next step will be for the local government to do a final property survey to ensure the proper dimensions for the boundary wall. The COVID-19 pandemic has slowed this process since government offices have been closed for a number of months. Once we have the land surveyed we will use our connections in Nepal to hire a reputable general contractor who will help with finalizing the blueprints and setting a date to physically break ground.
Don't miss out on this opportunity to have your giving matched by the end of this month. Please consider your most generous gift yet to provide a Forever Home for the orphans in Nepal.

From Synod of the Sun, PC(USA) ... Good News Stories: "In the Aftermath of Storms"
Amidst the changes and chances of the COVID-19 pandemic, churches and entities throughout the The Synod of the Sun found ways to not only survive but also find unique and beautiful ways to minister to God's people in need. Mission and ministry takes form in supplying basic necessities to caring for the environment. Connections have been made via video feed and blankets. Love is supplied via learning how to read to dArive-in diapers.
You can read all of our Good News Stories on our website at synodsun.org/good-news-stories.

In the Aftermath of Storms
EDITOR'S NOTE: his story comes to us from St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Lake Charles, LA. In the aftermath of two hurricanes and a tropical storm, one congregation rolls up its sleeves and finds faith in the struggle. Even as we send this story out, another storm (Zeta) is spinning up in the Gulf.
By Deborah Serra
LAKE CHARLES, LOUISIANA – When 98% of your congregation has been adversely affected by not one, but two hurricanes plus a tropical storm within five weeks what do you do? You pray for many mercies and then you roll up your sleeves and become a disaster aid distribution site. This is not St. Andrew Presbyterian’s first experience with devastation. Fifteen years ago, the church was severely damaged by Hurricane Rita. And now, although history has repeated itself, the congregation has pulled together to distribute a multitude of donations and gift cards from Church World Service, Presbyterian Disaster Aid, churches throughout the Presbytery of South Louisiana, neighboring churches and organizations in Houston, Austin, Beaumont, Florida, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and South Carolina.
Many of those donating are returning the favor from St. Andrew’s past disaster donations while others said the level of devastation they’d seen in the media had prompted them to act.
Southwest Louisiana Presbyterian churches pulled together to answer the many needs of their pummeled neighbors. First Presbyterian Church of DeRidder, Westminster in Sulphur, First and St. Andrew in Lake Charles all worked to ensure supplies and aid quickly headed to those in most need. Challenged by damage to their own churches, Covid-19 restrictions, scattered congregations, and wobbly infrastructure each church was blessed with members able to jump in to help organize, find some hidden pockets of need, and make sure buckets filled with cleaning supplies, totes filled with student supplies and hygiene kits made their way to struggling families. Buckets went to Cameron on the coast where it’s difficult to tell there had once been communities. St. Andrew, working with First Presbyterian Scotlandville, distributed more buckets and hygiene kits to families and seniors in areas of poverty in north Lake Charles where there are more blue tarps than undamaged roofs. Children whose homes are now a soggy memory with large trees crushing living areas shyly accept the totes filled with notebooks and crayons while dazed parents offer thanks and ask if there are any diapers remaining.
While Southwest Louisiana is no stranger to life altering weather, the members of its Presbyterian churches are more accustomed to offering aid rather than accepting help. We are the ones who go on mission trips, rather than having mission workers come to us. The aid distribution is a blessing to be able to provide. But it is important to note that congregation members have lost homes, jobs, face months of rebuilding and each day struggle to find supplies on store shelves, all while circumventing streets choked with trucks and workers restoring services and rebuilding homes
Faith has not been lost in the struggle. The battered live oak trees are budding after their trauma. Flowers are popping up on tomato plants once thought done for the season. The sound of hammers and workers’ chatter resound from rooftops across the region and neighbors cheer when the piles of downed and cut up giant trees are cleared from their streets. Windows and roofs will be replaced in our damaged churches and homes and we will recover. We are forever grateful to the many people and organizations sustaining us with their prayers, their contributions and their notes of care and concern.

From Austin Seminary: "Honor those who have helped you along your spiritual path"
• All Saints Remembrance Week, October 25-November 3
"There is a saying in Zen philosophy, 'When the student is ready the master will come.' I have been particularly blessed to have experienced this when Louis Zbinden arrived at Austin Seminary. While I was a student there, I took every class I could under Louis, and, like a sponge, soaked up all that I could from him. He was a font of wisdom, had a life of experience, and was eager to shepherd the next generation. He was a Christian gentleman in the best sense of the phrase; a person to emulate.
This All Saints Week, I am honoring Louis with a memorial gift in his name. I encourage everyone to honor the people who helped lead you down your own spiritual path with a gift in their memory."

• Home of Hope in Beirut, Vulnerable Children's Fund - October Update
Established in 1998 as a shelter for street children, Home of Hope in Beirut is under the governance of the Lebanese Evangelical Society. They now serve children between the ages of 7 and 18 who have been exposed to abuse by their primary caregivers or by members of their community and are at risk. The children are brought to Home of Hope upon a judicial order and with a protection file.
Raghida Al Assal has been the Executive Director for three years and shares this: Our purpose at Home of Hope is to help the children heal through Jesus Christ. Even though 99% of our children come from non-Christian backgrounds, they attend a weekly chapel at the home. We also encourage all our Christian and non-Christian staff to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner worthy of His mercy.
We currently serve 24 boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 18: 3 Palestinians, 3 Lebanese, 7 Syrians, and the remaining 11 children are undocumented. Undocumented children have no legal identification papers. Therefore, according to the law in Lebanon, they do not exist and have no rights. Home of Hope is the only shelter in Lebanon that takes undocumented children. We provide them with all their basic needs, as well as with academic support, vocational training, social activities, psychosocial support, and medical support.
Another project that we are currently working towards is providing our children with different activities that teach them valuable skills they may be able to use in the future such as sewing, basket making, cooking, woodworking, wall painting, plumbing, hairdressing, etc... About two years ago, we started sending our children to public schools (very few of them have ever been to school), until the age of 14. At that point, we try to identify their interests and direct them towards work skill training.
Home of Hope occupies a large, not-particularly-kid-friendly building that was constructed long ago as a home for the elderly. Raghida is working hard to make it feel less like an “institution” and more like a “home”. A recent gift from The Outreach Foundation allowed for the purchase of wooden beds and new clothes cupboards (all of which the children helped to build). A vegetable garden is planned plus the repainting of walls, renovating the basketball court, and eliminating humidity and mold. The Outreach Foundation will also seek funds, as a part of our Alternative Christmas, to provide a joyful holiday for these precious children.

Outreach Foundation Photos |

After Evangelicalism
The Path to a New Christianity
David Gushee offers a new way forward for disillusioned post-evangelicals by first analyzing what went wrong with U.S. white evangelicalism, and then proposing new ways of Christian believing, belonging, and behaving, helping post-evangelicals from where they are to a living relationship with Christ and an intellectually cogent and morally robust post-evangelical faith.
