Treating the Wounded in Southeast Mosul

Thank you for praying for the people of Iraq and Kurdistan. On Wednesday, the Iraqi Army began a new push to clear ISIS out of Southeast Mosul. So far ISIS is falling back, but not without taking lives with them. Two days ago three Iraqi soldiers from the unit we are working-with were killed by ISIS snipers. We also treated eight wounded that day. Thank you for all your help and prayers ...

WAW Wednesday ... Happy New Year!

"The Word at Work is a ministry that mobilizes churches and individuals to answer God's call to minister to those in need," writes Rev. Tim Tam, Director of the Amarillo, Texas-based ministry. "Through our relationships, God reveals needs and opportunities for service. As we come along side the poor, new friendships develop and doors for ministry open. As we serve, God provides the resources to supply for the needs he reveals."

Happy New Year!

Hello Friends,

Today we gathered as a Staff for the first time in 2017 -- we spent time catching up, laughing about some of the crazy things that happened last year, and sharing our hopes and concerns for the year to come.

We prayed for our Board of Directors as they prepare for their annual meeting in Belize next week.

We asked that God would continue to bless Tim Tam on his sabbatical.

We thanked God for our partners in Belize and the U.S. who are putting their faith into action.

We praised God for His provision through our donors and for how so many are cared for because of the self-sacrifice of others.

We asked for wisdom, mercy, and direction in the coming year.

Would you please join us in these prayers?

Gratefully,

Mollie and the Staff
The Word at Work

P.S. Tomorrow Tim Hagen will head off to Belize and get ready to receive his home church, St. Mary's Catholic Church of Amarillo. His team is excited to return to the Valley of Peace and see their friends there!

EDITOR'S NOTE: Speaking from my own first-hand experience - working side-by-side with Tim, Kenny and our brothers and sisters in Belize - won't you give thoughtful, prayerful consideration to supporting the efforts of Tim, the Word At Work staff and their partners? Please please fill out this Commitment Card and return it to their office!

Also, remember that you can follow The Word At Work on their Facebook page!

Partners Blog: "We are overwhelmed by your love and mercy for Aleppo"

Steve and Oddny Gumaer started Partners Relief and Development in response to the needs of refugees and displaced people from Burma. Their mission is to demonstrate, through holistic action, God’s love to children and communities made vulnerable by war in Burma.

We are overwhelmed by your love and mercy for Aleppo

Last week, our Founder Oddny went to Aleppo, held hands with displaced children and their mothers and endured the biting cold with them. And you, you heard their stories, saw Oddny’s pictures and responded with love and wild generosity. Because of you, $80,000 has already been wired directly to our relief partners in Aleppo so they can feed and provide sleeping bags for thousands. Because if your children had to sleep outside this winter, you would move heaven and earth to keep them warm, you did the same for children you have never met. And this mercy you showed? This mercy is gospel stuff: whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me. ...

It’s Not Over: Displacement Continues in Karen State

With two months into the conflict in Karen state the people of the K7 brigade region have yet to find respite from the intermitted clashes between the Democratic Benevolent Karen Army (DKBA), the Burma Army and Burma Army affiliated Border Guard Force (BGF). Both sides are guilty of committing numerous human rights abuses including forced conscription, new landmine laying, and firing upon civilians. While the total number of clashes have been low, the displacement of the people in this area has affected various sectors of livelihood such as ability to grow crops, access to shelter, healthcare, clean drinking water and education ...

WAW Wednesday ... Burdens and Blessings

Burdens and Blessings

Hello Friends,

When I prepare teams for their re-entry back to the States after serving in Belize, I encourage each of them to hang on to their "Belize Joy". If you've been on a trip with us, you'll likely know what I'm referring to - many of you reading this know the depth of this Joy and it causes you to return to Belize to see your friends again and again. It may also cause you to examine your life at home and look for those things that are stealing the Joy you found in Belize. This joy isn't just found in Belize though - it comes when we freely share the reason for our Hope with others; when we loosen our grip on the bounty God provides for us; when we slow down long enough to see suffering in those around us and take the time to share their burden.

This week between Christmas and the New Year has always felt a little odd to me. So much energy goes into preparation for the celebration of Jesus's birthday .... and then there's this quiet .... this stillness .... and we begin to reflect on the past year and plan for the coming one. We may spend the time reflecting on the burdens that have been lifted or those that we still carry. We may count our blessings and thank God for those who have blessed us. Or, we may find ourselves wondering about the blessings and burdens to come. In 2017, may we be encouraged by God's perfect plan; may we put His word into action, by serving others, sharing our burdens and being generous with our blessings. Together we surely are the Word at Work.

Gratefully,

Mollie
The Word at Work

The 2016 Christmas Project was incredible ... as we delivered gifts to our partners all over Belize we reminded each of them that these gifts are provided by God. He gets all the glory! We couldn't help but share a few smiles with you - both young and young-at-heart! Thank you to all who shared their blessings to make it all possible!

Progress for Exodus Church ... Hurricane Earl may have interrupted Discovery Church's plan; but, it multiplied the blessing they brought and experienced working with Exodus Church in Belize City! Part of their group came in August after the storm and taught swimming to many of the youth leaders there. The rest of the team arrived December 17 and jumped right in to Christmas VBS, spreading fill on the new property to prepare for building, and Christmas caroling through the neighborhood near the church. We look forward to how the relationship between these two churches will continue to grow!

For me 2016 was about learning to balance 'what is' and 'what isn't yet.' It was a year that challenged me to hold all of my joy in one hand and sorrow in the other, without letting one overshadow the other; a year to understand better how to live in the tension of gratitude and longing with my feet firmly planted in the truth that God is always, always good. From my work with Faces of Children to some of my personal journey, this year challenged me to unflinchingly look at pain while never surrendering hope.

I hope over the last year as you've read through these emails and prayed with us, you've found yourself unflinchingly looking at the pain in the world, especially as it affects children, while also stubbornly refusing to give up your belief that light is always more powerful than darkness and that God is always bringing about redemption and hope in the darkest of circumstances.

As we move forward into 2017, our Faces of Children leadership team has decided to adopt a theme for the year, and it's a theme I fully believe embodies this tension of gratitude and longing, of joy and sorrow.

Displaced but not misplaced.  *

As we look around the world, we see children displaced by conflict and war, natural disasters, fractured families, and all sorts of other painful circumstances. Their displacement often means everything about their life is in a state of upheaval. Nothing is normal, and many of them have lost all sense of felt safety in the world. This isn't OK. Displaced children are traumatized children, and they need our love, prayer, and care.

But in the midst of their trauma and tragedy, we can trust displaced children are never misplaced by God. He knows each and every child, down to the number of hairs on their heads. He created them with love and great joy for a purpose. He has not forgotten them, even if it seems as though the world has, and I believe God is challenging us not to forget these children, either. We follow a God who says He turns the world's 'unloved' into 'beloved,' and I believe He's inviting us on a divine adventure to do the same.

Over the course of this year, we will unpack and explore this theme more as it relates to many different challenges vulnerable children face -- from here in our own communities to the other side of the world. Will you join me in 2017? Let's intentionally reject apathy and step into praying fervently for God's children in every corner of this globe. As we do so, I trust our prayers will move us to love and our love to action.

Praying with you,

Carrie
