WAW Wednesday ... "A stitch in time ..."

"The Word at Work is a ministry that mobilizes churches and individuals to answer God's call to minister to those in need," writes Rev. Tim Tam, Director of the Amarillo, Texas-based ministry. "Through our relationships, God reveals needs and opportunities for service. As we come along side the poor, new friendships develop and doors for ministry open. As we serve, God provides the resources to supply for the needs he reveals."

WAW Wednesday: "A stitch in time ..."

Dear Friends,

We've been talking a lot about "back to school" around our offices these past couple of weeks ...

Asher Started Preschool

He's been coming to work with his mom, Jo (our amazing Team Coordinator), since he was just a few months old. We celebrated the milestone, and also realized once again how quickly time slips by ...

Meanwhile in Belize, Kenny & Chepito have been helping teachers get their libraries set up with donated text books and reading materials that many of you have shared with us -- thank you!

OH -- and they've helped put the classrooms together in the new Preschool in Valley of Peace! That's right - the school passed inspection and is open for business! We hear Chepito's son Matteo started preschool also - I think he might be in one of these photos!

Our Belize Scholarship Committee is reviewing our Scholarship Program. Students across Belize are attending primary, secondary, and trade schools because of our friends in the U.S. who are dedicated to improving lives through education!

We've read letters from program recipients - their thrill of having a chance to go to school is inspiring. One student shared, "...even though I don't know your name, I thank you and send you my love because yo have shown your special love to each one of us. Thank you, thank you, and I hope to do the same when I grow up, to help people in need; because God's Word says we can do everything through Christ who strengthens us!"

We've been conspiring about scooping up clearance back-to-school items to ship to Belize -- maybe you've found a great deal? We're lining out shipping container schedules soon - please let Tim Hagen know if you've got school supplies that might be included in our next shipment.

Many Are Learning New Skills

Pedro and Maria Perez, our business development partners in Belize and directors of Christian Sewing Partners of Belize (CSPB), sent us an encouraging report recently about expansion into Southern Belize:

"We were able to start the sewing program in Santa Cruz and Santa Elena with the Rio Blanco Women's group (a beautiful water fall is there) where they have electricity from solar. The program has around 15 ladies and they are right into it.

Maria is pictured (above) with women in the Rio Blanco village (Toledo District) - - 25 women from 2 villages meet together; pray together; and encourage one another. Maria and Pedro delivered machines and material that TWAW donors provided! Students learned about machine maintenance and more.

The building at Santa Rosa (shown below) should be completed next week and in the first instance we will run electricity from the church to the sewing center. As we move we will get our own meter. Since this training center is central to all the programs we now have in the South we will embark on training initiatives; we want to use this as a sewing center and craft training for the area. Team members from the U.S. trained in pottery, leather, lathe, may want to come for short periods to train there. I am also exploring to piggy back with a new program that is planning to work in the area to develop women in crafts and arts."

In Santa Rosa the group hasn't met this summer because they were busy making school uniforms in their homes. Imagine using treadle machines--if you've got one in your attic it could easily be put to good use in these remote areas of Belize where electricity can be scarce!

Maria shares, "We thank God for the opportunity of working with all ethnic groups of Belize!"

The Perez's are looking forward to a visit from Erin & Brad Willcutt from Pascagoula, MS -- the Willcutt's are feeling led to use their gifts to help with bringing the items that are created through CSPB to market where they can benefit the participants even further. Would you please pray with us that doors would open for their efforts?

Prayers for Hurricane Relief

We are praying with so many families from Belize who have loved ones in the areas devastated by hurricane Harvey - - and now here comes Irma, to another area where many Belize friends live. We are really encouraged by the stories of God's Church on the move to help -- and we look forward to connecting resources in the long rebuild ahead.

Pray for those in desperate need.
Pray for thoughtful and effective responses.
Pray for us as we try to coordinate with our friends and partners already on site.

Blessings,
Tim Tam
#wearethewordatwork

EDITOR'S NOTE: Speaking from my own first-hand experience - working side-by-side with Tim, Kenny and our brothers and sisters in Belize - won't you give thoughtful, prayerful consideration to supporting the efforts of Tim, the Word At Work staff and their partners? Please please fill out this Commitment Card and return it to their office!

Also, remember that you can follow The Word At Work on their Facebook page!

Invitation to Prayer from Faces of Children ... TODAY

Faces of Children is an ecumenical prayer ministry under the auspices of First Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas. Their mission is to initiate ministries of prayer for children in churches, communities, and neighborhoods. In doing so, they seek to provide an opportunity for people of God to join together, learn about children and their needs throughout the world, and celebrate Christ's love (especially as it relates to children).

Invitation to Prayer ... TODAY

Hi Friends,

If you're in town and free, please join us to pray together on Wednesday - TODAY - at 11:00 a.m., in the gym conference room at First Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas.

Please note the new time. We are trying this for one semester so that we have less time conflict with the new women's Bible study that is starting on Wednesdays at 11:30.

Also, Faces of Children is now on Facebook! I invite you to like our page so that you can see regular stories, prayer needs, and updates from partner ministries.

All the best,

Carrie

She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me, " for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me." Genesis 16:13
Dear Intercessors,

El Roi. The God who sees. Hagar first used this name of God when she was fleeing her mistress. In the midst of her flight, she encountered God. A servant -- powerless, hopeless, scared -- fleeing her powerful mistress. Presumably, Hagar didn't have much value assigned to her in the household where she served... another set of hands, another body, another tool. And yet as she was running, she did not escape God's notice. He saw her. And somehow in being seen, Hagar was able to see her worth and to see God.

The Rohingya, a persecuted people group in Myanmar we have been praying for over the last few years, is in desperate need of being seen. Over the last few weeks, violence in the camps has escalated and what little outside support they were receiving has mostly ceased as the Myanmar government cracks down on small groups of Rohingya insurgents. Currently 123,000 Rohingya have fled western Myanmar since August 25, trying to enter Bangladesh as refugees but being turned back at the border.

Sadly, this escalation has corresponded with other headline-grabbing events, such as Hurricane Harvey and the simmering crisis in the Korean peninsula. And as a result, most of the world's attention is diverted elsewhere, and thousands of Rohingya suffer and die without many noticing.

They need to know El Roi.

We need to know El Roi.

We need to open our eyes and see. We need to look at the mothers, scrambling over steep ravines clinging to listless, dehydrated babies, trying to find safety. We need to look at the fathers, backed into corners of deprivation, watching their children slowly starve and being stripped of their land, property, animals, and livelihoods. We need to look at the children, who have grown up knowing only hunger, thirst, sickness, and violence - the spark of childhood innocence and playfulness never able to take root.

We need to confess that we are too quick to focus our attention, empathy, and assistance on neighbors who are close-by... whose tragedies feel more familiar. We ignore those whose sorrows and losses seem so overwhelmingly large and unsolvable. We don't know what to do, so we look away.

And as we see and confess and pray, may we also find some comfort in the fact that we serve a God named El Roi. He sees every single Rohingya person. He sees their sorrow, loss, and pain. He sees their hunger and their heartache. He sees their suffering. Even as we pray for the alleviation of all the brutality they face, may we also pray that in the midst of it all, they are able to behold El Roi, the One who sees them. Come quickly, Lord Jesus.

Praying with you,
Carrie

PS: Finally, as we see, confess, pray and trust, may we also give thanks for groups like Partner's Relief and Development who have never fallen silent and who continue to tirelessly work to bring relief, attention, and hope to the Rohingya.

Partners Blog: "About Time"

Steve and Oddny Gumaer started Partners Relief and Development in response to the needs of refugees and displaced people from Burma, and now in the Middle East, as well. Their mission is to demonstrate, through holistic action, God’s love to children and communities made vulnerable by war in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and other conflict zones.

About Time

No amount of training could prepare me for the question that followed: “What size diapers and how many?”

Well, there it is. I didn’t even really know there were different sizes of diapers. Apparently here in Mosul, Iraq, there are five sizes, which makes sense, I suppose. I’d just never really thought about it. The question came in a long line of other questions such as how many rice bags and how many boxes of formula we could afford and what kind of biscuits do we want (the tastier ones, obviously) and how many boxes of tomato paste, flats of juice boxes, and a plethora of other questions that dragged us slowly through the hot, dusty Iraqi afternoon. I tapped away furiously at my calculator and wrote down lists of numbers and added and changed and subtracted and tried to keep everything straight with flies buzzing around my face and sweat dripping slowly into my eyes. The clock slowly moved on. Tick tock, tick tock ...

• Students and employees continue fundraising efforts for American Red Cross at Fall 2017 Club Fair Wednesday, September 6, 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Beal Plaza

Midland College

MIDLAND, TEXAS - Last Monday, members of the Midland College (MC) Student Government Association joined community college students across Texas to raise funds for the American Red Cross for relief of Hurricane Harvey victims. MC fundraising efforts will continue through Friday of this week, September 8, and activities at Wednesday’s fall semester Club Fair will focus on Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

“Our students really want to do something to assist the victims of Harvey,” said MC Student Activities Coordinator Taneekwa Ross-Hurdle. “Last Monday was the first day of classes for Texas community colleges not affected by Hurricane Harvey. Even though students were busy with the first day of classes, we contacted one another and decided that the best way we could assist initially is to give funds to the American Red Cross. At tomorrow’s Club Fair, MC student organizations will continue fundraising. For example, the MC Student Ambassadors will hold a bake sale during the Club Fair and also on Thursday.”

To date, the MC Student Government Association has collected $1,889 from students and employees. These funds along with those collected this week will be sent to the Permian Basin Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Donations can also be made online at https://www.redcross.org/donate/hurricane-harvey

Midland College students and employees will also be joining with state and national higher education institutions to launch the Harvey HELP Fund, a crowd-sourced relief fund dedicated to aiding the close to 500,000 students impacted by Hurricane Harvey--almost a third of all of the college and university students in the state. HELP, which stands for Higher Education Learning Pathways, will provide emergency funds to enable students in southeast Texas to stay on or more quickly return to their education pathway.

About MC Club Fair

The semi-annual Club Fair is held at the beginning of each fall and spring semester and is an opportunity for students to gather information about various MC student clubs and activities. Business partners and nonprofit organizations are also represented at the Fair. Lunch is provided to all MC students. Wednesday’s Club Fair will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at Beal Plaza, located outside the Scharbauer Student Center on the main MC campus.

SEASON OF PEACE - In a speech celebrating the 1979 peace treaty between Israel and Egypt, former President Jimmy Carter said, “Peace, like war, is waged.” These words were a thoughtful turn-of-phrase and a challenging declaration spoken at an auspicious moment. However, they did not originate with Carter or his speechwriters. They came from the pen of Carter’s fellow Georgian Walker Knight, a Christian journalist, poet and peacemaker. Since Carter uttered these words, they have turned up in various places where peace is promoted. For example, actor George Clooney repeated the phrase in a statement praising the work of United Nations peacekeepers ...
