MIDLAND, TEXAS - Last Monday, members of the Midland College (MC) Student Government Association joined community college students across Texas to raise funds for the American Red Cross for relief of Hurricane Harvey victims. MC fundraising efforts will continue through Friday of this week, September 8, and activities at Wednesday’s fall semester Club Fair will focus on Hurricane Harvey relief efforts.

“Our students really want to do something to assist the victims of Harvey,” said MC Student Activities Coordinator Taneekwa Ross-Hurdle. “Last Monday was the first day of classes for Texas community colleges not affected by Hurricane Harvey. Even though students were busy with the first day of classes, we contacted one another and decided that the best way we could assist initially is to give funds to the American Red Cross. At tomorrow’s Club Fair, MC student organizations will continue fundraising. For example, the MC Student Ambassadors will hold a bake sale during the Club Fair and also on Thursday.”

To date, the MC Student Government Association has collected $1,889 from students and employees. These funds along with those collected this week will be sent to the Permian Basin Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Donations can also be made online at https://www.redcross.org/donate/hurricane-harvey

Midland College students and employees will also be joining with state and national higher education institutions to launch the Harvey HELP Fund, a crowd-sourced relief fund dedicated to aiding the close to 500,000 students impacted by Hurricane Harvey--almost a third of all of the college and university students in the state. HELP, which stands for Higher Education Learning Pathways, will provide emergency funds to enable students in southeast Texas to stay on or more quickly return to their education pathway.
