From @chinaaid : "Catholic churches suffer persecution after China-Vatican agreement"

The China Aid Association is a non-profit Christian organization - based in Midland, Texas - with a mission to uncover and reveal the truth about religious persecution in China, focusing especially on the unofficial church. They do this, they explain in their website, by exposing the abuses, encouraging the abused and equipping the saints to advance the kingdom of God throughout China.

In the News ... "Midland College PTK hosting sex trafficking awareness event - THIS WEEK"

Reflection Ministries Image
• Event is open to the public

At Midland College convocation Monday morning, we got to hear from three amazing MC Phi Theta Kappa students! They have just wrapped up their College Project (resources for students to Start, Strive, Succeed), and this week will wrap up their Honors in Action project with a sex trafficking awareness event this Thursday, January 10, at 5:00 PM in room #101 (the auditorium) of the F. Marie Hall Academic Building (MHAB), on the MC main campus.

We will have a light dinner set up about 4:45 and the program will begin at 5:00 and will last about 45 minutes. You will be amazed, shocked, horrified, but well-educated as you learn about sex trafficking right here in our own backyard. We will share much of what we learned from Reflection Ministries (nondenominational), an agency in Midland that deals specifically with this issue. They work to identify victims, equip them with skills to lead productive lives, and to assist in restoring their self worth.

The PTK students felt that this awareness event would benefit our campus and the community on this heartbreaking issue.

The students have worked really hard on researching this topic and are really hoping for a great turnout. Please join us, and let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks so much!

Invitation to Prayer from Faces of Children ... Wednesday

Faces of Children is an ecumenical prayer ministry under the auspices of First Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas. Their mission is to initiate ministries of prayer for children in churches, communities, and neighborhoods. In doing so, they seek to provide an opportunity for people of God to join together, learn about children and their needs throughout the world, and celebrate Christ's love (especially as it relates to children).

Invitation to Prayer ... Wednesday

Hi Friends,

If you're in Midland this week, we'll be meeting at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 9, for prayer. We meet in the prayer closet at First Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas. Please join us in lifting up the needs of vulnerable children in our community and around the world!

Blessings,

Carrie

Dear Intercessors,

Having school-age children means for me, this is the week when the holiday season feels officially over. My kindergartner and second-grader are returning to school today - equal parts eager to get into the routine and see their friends and dragging their feet at the early wake-up call. But in spite of the minor complaints, I remain incredibly grateful that they live in a place where education is a foregone conclusion.

I'm sending my girls off to school today ... but in many countries around the world, girls are pulled out of school and sold off into marriage to try to keep relentless poverty at bay, if only for a moment.

I'm sending my girls off to school today ... but in many countries around the world, kids aren't able to go to school because of conflict and war -- sometimes because they've been forced to fight instead.

Photo by Nariman El-Mofty / AP

I'm sending my girls off to school today ... but in many countries around the world, parents are taking their children on dangerous and sometimes deadly journeys of thousands of miles to try and find a better life. These smuggling operations thrust children into complex and risky situations -- overwhelming US border control and causing law-makers to dig their heels in on complicated immigration questions.

Photo by Nick Oza, Arizona Republic

In each of these situations -- child brides and child soldiers and child pawns in immigration arguments -- the only clear response we can offer is our prayers.

At the start of a New Year, I find myself aware that the contrasts of this world are not growing any less stark. And I'm less interested in resolutions and intentions and plans for a fresh start, and more interested in practicing gratitude for this enormously good life I've been given. I pray we can each center ourselves in gratitude for the many good things God has brought into our lives... and may that gratitude turn our focus upward and outward, especially to the children of the world who need our prayers, our care, our attention and our help.

Warmly,

Carrie

From ServLife International ... "Beyond Liturgy and Song"

ServLife International is a movement defined by values of God’s kingdom, not programs built around human efforts and activities. The reign and rule of God should be made apparent to every person on the planet, despite their religion, race or socioeconomic status. We believe that issues of justice are inseparable from the good news that Jesus Christ came to proclaim. ServLife exists to take the gospel of Christ and the hope of a better, more just, world to the lives of people we touch. This happens through individual contributions of time, creativity, resources and dreams.

Beyond Liturgy and Song

As a worship pastor in the 2000’s I loved leading the congregation in anthem praise of the Creator and Sustainer. We’d turn out the lights, light some candles, pack the room and sing at the top of our lungs. It was amazing, but it was missing something. I was missing something ...

The Free Burma Rangers (FBR) is a multi-ethnic humanitarian service movement. They bring help, hope and love to people in the war zones of Burma (Myanmar) and the Middle East. Reconnecting with Friends in Basra

Thank you for your prayers and helping us get into Basra, Iraq. As many of you know, Basra now has over 100,000 people sick from bad water, there are riots with many factions involved, and the Iraqi Army does not have complete control. In September, the Iranian consulate was burned down and the US consulate shut down. Different groups want control of the nearby oil fields and in the midst of this our Iraqi Army friends asked for help. This was the same unit we worked with in the battle of Mosul where together we fed over 75,000 people and treated over 4,000 people. We have continued our partnership with them and planned to go to Basra with funds to help with needed food and medicine for the local population ...

In a unique exchange with Salvadoran youth, during a Bible study on the beach, we privileged, and somewhat sheltered North American college students were interrogated about our countries’ policies and forced to reflect on our own complicity.
