AN EXTRAORDINARY GIFT
Jocelyn Logan
MMM Co-founder

“Here is a boy here with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?”
John 6:9

MMM provided 47,000 110-pound bags of maize during the famine of 2015-16 that ravaged many communities during the El Nina drought in central and northern Malawi. Forty-seven thousand families were fed for a month, or were there more?

The most vulnerable, the elderly, widows, mothers with small children were chosen by the Traditional Authority and church leaders. Many fathers had left their villages in search of food. We followed the lorry truck loaded with 200 bags of maize to the distribution point for the 200 selected families that were waiting patiently. I was surprised to see 1782 families seated on the ground who had traveled many miles with the hope they too might get maize.

The selected family names were called out. The first, an old man with a cane, weathered face, struggling to walk to the table where he put his thumb print on the paper that bore his name. He was followed by a frail old woman, and then a thin mother with a baby strapped to her back, each signed and received a voucher. When I saw the mother, I was reminded of the discussion I had with a senior church official. The anguish he felt when babies cried constantly because nursing mothers had no milk. The scene was repeated over and over. With their precious vouchers, they and their helpers came to the lorry and lifted the maize bags on top of their heads. Young children with small plastic bowls scrambled to pick up every precious kernel that spilled on the ground. Their usual gleeful smiles replaced by the intensity of this task. I felt overwhelming sorrow and heartbreak.

I looked over and saw a small group with small bags open, and the chosen recipient with children to feed for a month was sharing her maize with others in her village. There is only enough in one bag to feed a family of 6. Yet, how could she eat while her neighbor starved? Perhaps, she felt her family might get by with one meal a day. I witnessed the same type of sharing over and over across the road and behind the church building.

Application Question: “No act of love is ever small” (Mother Teresa). What simple act of kindness “done with great love” can we do today?

Prayer: Loving God, thank You for revealing Yourself to us through “the least of these.” An ordinary gift of a bag of maize, became an extraordinary gift of life for so many. Your resources are never too little to serve God’s people.

MINISTRY BEYOND CHURCH WALLS - Theologian Emil Brunner famously stated, “The church exists by mission, just as fire exists by burning.” This didn’t quite sink in until I heard Darrell Guder, former dean and missiologist at Princeton Theological Seminary, put it more clearly for me: “The church does not exist primarily for the benefit of its own members. Instead, it exists for the benefit of those outside its walls.”

These truths illustrate why the Presbyterian Mission Agency has chosen “outward incarnational focus” as one of the seven marks of vital congregations ...

MORE THAN A CUP OF WATER
Alisa Simpson
Volunteer, Missouri

“...and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple—truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.”
Matthew 10:42

When I first learned about Marion Medical Mission and the results they obtained each season, it sounded almost too good to be true. So many wells installed in such a short time, with clean, safe drinking water for so many thousands of people. Eventually I decided I wanted to participate in this process for myself. I have to say, being at each and every well was an awesome experience.

On the first day of dedicating wells, I looked around the villagers while my experienced partner led the dedication. I realized that many children were present who should have been in school. Many of them needed shoes, and I was sure they all needed books. After dedicating several wells, I realized I wasn’t concentrating on the clean water being pumped out and the joy expressed by the villagers; rather, I was concentrating on what I could do to get those children in school, put shoes on their feet and books in their hands. On my second day, I had to take a step back and refocus. I was so overwhelmed by what I wanted to do for those beautiful children that I wasn’t thinking about my purpose in being there, which was to offer them that literal and symbolic cup of clean water. Such a simple thing we take for granted, but a gesture that means so much more than just the water itself.

The installed wells are always stamped “Glory to God” in both English and in the local language. And truly, it is the hand outstretched in love that matters, reminding the villagers and ourselves that the glory does indeed belong to God.

Application Question: How can we, no matter where we are, extend “a cup of cold water” to the people around us?

Prayer: Gracious and loving God, we thank You for the gifts You have given us, and the opportunities to share Your love with others no matter where we are. We asked for Your continued guidance as we move through a world that is more divided by the day, and patience to see people not as other, but as Yours. In Jesus’ name we pray.

FBR Report: "Stand Against the Evil of ISIS, Show Another Way" Video

The Free Burma Rangers (FBR) is a multi-ethnic humanitarian service movement. They bring help, hope and love to people in the war zones of Burma (Myanmar) and the Middle East. Groups send teams to be trained, supplied and sent into the areas under attack to provide emergency assistance and human rights documentation. Together with other groups, the teams work to serve people in need.

Dear friends,

“Stand Against Evil Show another Way” is a short film we released earlier but are sending out again to highlight the ongoing tragedy in Syria. We are sending this report out again as there has not been improvement and the situation is more desperate and dangerous there.

Thank you and God bless you,

Dave Eubank

Video Report: "Stand Against the Evil of ISIS, Show Another Way"

Dear friends,

Earlier this year, while on mission in Baghouz, Syria, the last stronghold of ISIS, FBR worked with the Syrian Democratic Forces as they defeated ISIS, and were able to connect with ISIS women and children fleeing the area. When the team returned to Syria this spring, they visited Al-Hawl refugee camp which is now home to ISIS families. Here’s a video made by Sahale and Suuzanne Eubank that shows their experience in Baghouz and Al-Hawl ...

HOW AWESOME IS THIS PLACE
Rick Delaney
Volunteer, Ohio

“When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, ‘Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it.’ He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”
Genesis 28: 16-17

The Karonga team had been working together for nearly three weeks. Long hikes for 3-4 miles. Valley to mountain tops – and back again. Rugged roads with miles of navigation. We were blitzed emotionally, physically and spiritually. One early morning we drove 2 hours to a previously visited area due to miscommunication about a well site’s readiness for installation. I was convinced this was due to un preparedness by the team in coordinating with the village. Our Field Officer and I spoke about fuel costs, wear and tear on the vehicle - time lost in the logistical criss-cross in the northern boundaries of Malawi back to the Livingstonia region. The two hours translates to four when factoring drive time back to our original start point to install the 2nd, 3rd – 8th well of the day. Then, the probable drive at night from the mountains to guest house back in Karonga.

Upon our arrival to the village – we were greeted with warm handshakes and smiles. The murmur of conversation and footsteps down to the installation site; and the subsequent installation of the well. A perfect fit. A prayer. Our dedication. We asked the headman to share remarks. Slowly, thoughtfully – he praised God. His gratitude for MMM for bring- ing protected clean water to their village for the first time; and a request to share this love with neighbors whose need was far greater than their own. I was being reminded ~

As we readied to depart, they were insistent on our breaking bread with the headman. Adjacent to the well, they built a small canopy to sit under to sip tea and share biscuits and conversation. The village community sang hymns. A light fog rising from the valley – and the continued conversation and song. We sat. We smiled. We held hands.

It was innocent, pure, divine and calming – as I was reminded of those who’ve gone before me. Patience. Pause. Presence & Praise to our heavenly father. For this must be the house of God; and this surely is the gate to heaven

Application Question: How will you pause each day, trust each day, be present each day and praise God for bringing you to this sacred place?

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, I ask for Your grace and peace as I rest at Your feet and meditate on Your word. Give me the patience to linger in Your presence and to share Your love and spirit with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Amen

FEAR NOT
Thomas Standwell Soko
MMM Field Officer, Zambia

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”
Matthew 10:28 [KJV]

For God says blessed is the one who loses his life for His sake and will gain life, and the one who keeps or protects his life loses it. For it is better and good to sacrifice in order to serve God’s people better and diligently in all areas of human endeavors.

God, instill the spirit of love, humility and humanity in all those trying to instill fear in us, to make us feel to freely execute your work of serving your beloved people by providing to them the precious commodity of the Protected, Safe and Clean drinking Water, through perceptional attacks. Give us more courage, not to ever work in fear.

Application Question: How do you respond when people try to instill fear?

Prayer: Dear My Almighty God of Mercy, I ask You to continue giving me courage and strength to continue trusting that You are in charge and that Your Will does always prevail and is sufficient. You strengthen my faith, O Lord, to continue following You in every aspect of my whole life. Lord so that, I shall not lose any part of my body to the evil attacks of my adversaries. In the name of Your only begotten Son Lord Jesus Christ, who died on the Cross, to save us from our iniquities/sin, I pray, Amen! And Amen!

ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE
Meg Packard
Volunteer and MMM Board Member, Alabama

“And Jesus looking upon them said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Matthew 19:26

It would be impossible for our two small American volunteer teams, four coordinators, 23 field officers, 94 installation supervisors and 1000+ builders to install 3,000 wells over 57,000 square miles in Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia this year. But what is impossible for men and women to accomplish on their own is made possible with God! It is God that touches the hearts of thousands of donors, volunteers, and trained professionals every year and leads them to partner with Marion Medical Mission to provide clean, safe drinking water to those most in need.

The tasks and challenges that face us every morning when we set out in our trucks present a seemingly impossible situation. A long day, uncomfortable travel, heat, and hard work lie before us. And while mustering a positive attitude is critical to our individual and collective success in the field, we have no chance at all if we think we can pull it off ourselves ... we have every chance in the world if we trust God to do it. Mind you, trusting God “to do it,” does not mean we can just sit back, eat mangoes, and bask in the sun with our toes dipped in the lake. As our founder Tom is fond of reminding us, we must pray, pray, pray, and then get up off our knees and get to work!!

Whatever struggles we are facing at the moment, however difficult the day looks, however impossible the situation seems, it is important to always remember God’s love for each of us and trust that “with God all things are possible.” With the grace of God, we are called together to give our own unique gifts and to keep our hearts focused and true to the task that is before us -- all to the glory of God!

Application Question: Will you keep your heart and mind open today to receive God’s call in small, unexpected places to be the person He wants you to be?

Prayer: Give me wisdom, peace and power to live the kind of life You want me to lead and be the person You want me to be. Amen.
