MIDLAND, TEXAS - While he didn’t have the opportunity to meet Pope Francis, Midlander Dale Brown was no less impressed on his fifth visit to Rome -- this time as an executive producer of “Silence,” the recently released film by Martin Scorsese. Based on the 1969 novel by Shusaku Endo, “Silence” tells the story of the violent religious persecution of Christians, specifically Jesuit priests, in 17th century Japan ...

Grace in Nicaragua ... "We've Arrived"

All this week, members of Grace Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas, will be part of a mission team in Nicaragua, partnering with the the Presbyterian Hunger Program and Equal Exchange, getting a first-hand look at the coffee farming business in Nicaragua. The trip will provide Presbyterians who are involved or interested in fair trade to see how it works and meet face-to-face with those who grow the coffee.

We've arrived safely and met those outside our Texas area ... Peggy, Jenni, Tom, Bethany, Lauri, Jillian, Luis and David. Have eaten well and hope to rest well tonight.

Leaving from DFW was slow ... on the plane and then maintenance for three hours before we took off.

Learned about Equal Exchange this afternoon and toured managua this p.m. Leave for Condega and our host's homes tomorrow in the coffee producing hills a few hours away. We will sleep well tonight. Appreciate the prayers each day that you all provide.

Craig, Judy, Mark, Karen, Jose Luis, Cecillia, Pat (and BJ in thought)

MINUTE FOR MISSION: CRIMINAL JUSTICE SUNDAY - By the eighth grade, Kimo had stopped showing up for school. He preferred the beaches of western Oahu or the island bus system that took him away from the frustrations of the classroom. When he was 20, Kimo was shipped off to a private prison in the Arizona desert, contracted by the state of Hawaii to house its prisoners ...

REFORMED AND ALWAYS BEING REFORMED - Believing we can change things for the better is risky. When we hope that individuals, communities, and institutions are capable of living more wholly, acting more rightly, and treating others more kindly, there is a good chance we will be disappointed and might even look foolish. It is safer to think people and circumstances will never change than to expend the energy that comes with believing they will. It is safer to minimize our own capabilities and responsibilities than to “be the change we want to see in the world,” as Gandhi challenges us ...

Giving It Back To Kids (GIBTK), our distribution partner in southern Vietnam, believes that every child is a gift and deserves an education. One of the children whom they’re serving is seven-year-old Ha Phuoc, a shy young man who has endured so much already: a typhoon took his father’s life at sea while he was still in the womb, leaving his mother traumatized, and she soon gave birth to Ha Phuoc, who has a disability that six orthopedic surgeries have not been able to correct ...

MID-KENTUCKY PRESBYTERY - “There are no atheists in foxholes” is a famous quote attributed to U.S. military chaplain William Thomas Cummings. WAW Wednesday ... A few quick photos to share ...

"The Word at Work is a ministry that mobilizes churches and individuals to answer God's call to minister to those in need," writes Rev. Tim Tam, Director of the Amarillo, Texas-based ministry. "Through our relationships, God reveals needs and opportunities for service. As we come along side the poor, new friendships develop and doors for ministry open. As we serve, God provides the resources to supply for the needs he reveals."

A few quick photos to share ...

Hello Friends,

I'm pretty amazed by technology - I'm sitting on an island in the Caribbean typing this message to you! Our Board has been meeting with partners this week - hearing their visions for ministry; asking them how we might be better partners; and praying to God with great thanksgiving for how together we are the Word at work!

We are on a break at the moment and I thought I would share a few photos that capture the joy - can't share them all here, but I think they tell a little bit of the story ...
WAW Photos
Our team from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Amarillo have had a GREAT time working with friends in Valley of Peace. They've been building a bell tower (yes, they also brought the bell!) that is used to communicate concerns and news to everyone in VOP - there's a lot of excitement about this project! Additionally, the group has run a clinic for children, new moms, and Community Health Workers are receiving training. The group is also doing a sewing project together and a few other cement / construction projects. It's a beautiful thing to see and hear about all these friends are sharing together. In this photo the group is having breakfast at Banana Bank and preparing for the day ahead.
WAW Photo
Is it time for your church to join us for a vision trip? Have you been to Belize previously and you'd like to rekindle your relationships there? Please give me a shout so we can talk about the possibilities! (806) 342-3600

Thanks for being the Word at Work!

EDITOR'S NOTE: Speaking from my own first-hand experience - working side-by-side with Tim, Kenny and our brothers and sisters in Belize - won't you give thoughtful, prayerful consideration to supporting the efforts of Tim, the Word At Work staff and their partners? Please please fill out this Commitment Card and return it to their office!

Invitation to Prayer, TODAY

Dear Intercessors,

This week to guide us in our prayers, I'm sharing a current event before the Supreme Court right now, one Story of Hope, and one story that fits in with our annual campaign: Displaced Not Misplaced. Please join me this week in asking God to move on behalf of vulnerable children ... whether they be children with special needs, children in failing schools, or migrant children caught in Europe's brutal winter.

USA // Supreme Court hears case regarding special education standards.
The Supreme Court is currently hearing arguments in a case regarding what public schools must do to provide a free education that meets a child's needs. Justices have said that the case is mired in a "blizzard of words," with terms and their definitions likely shaping the ruling in ways that could be unintentional. Caught between a desire to provide all children -- even those with severe disabilities -- an appropriate free education and the inherent costs that some children's educations might put on local school districts, the court is wrestling with the right way to rule. Please be praying for the justices to have great wisdom and insight into this matter, so that the needs of families with children with extensive and expensive needs will be met. Read more here ...

USA // Inspiring inner-city teacher creatively teaches kids
After helping his 2nd grade class write and perform a rap to learn the meanings of who, what, when, where and why to help prepare them for an assessment they had previously all failed, Mr. Bonner ended up on the Ellen DeGeneres show after the video of the kids rapping went viral. More importantly than the fame they garnered for the video, the kids nearly all passed the next assessment! Mr. Bonner is an inspiring example of teachers who are making a difference in challenging classrooms. "Poverty has this way of disrupting the brain," he said. "Trying to teach a kid that doesn't have a home and who is hungry is a different ballgame. And when it shows up in your classroom, you have to find a way to continually fight and persevere." And persevere he did! Mr. Bonner's creativity and passion earned his school $25,000 and lots of electronics to use in the classroom from the Ellen Show. And the video showing him with his students? Priceless. Please pray for more teachers like Mr. Bonner to fill classrooms across this country. And for the countless teachers working with passion, creativity, and dedication who go unnoticed, pray they take encouragement from stories like this and continue fighting the good fight.
