MIDLAND, TEXAS - After serving Mass at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, it was in washing dishes at a home for the disabled in rural Italy that Deacon Mike LaMonica said he learned what it looks like to truly love others as Jesus directed.

"It's a way to look at humanity differently," LaMonica said, of Casa Di Carita, a Catholic home that serves disabled individuals free of charge. "They don't look at them as they cannot contribute. This is not somebody you stick off in a corner somewhere."

It was a lesson he didn't expect to encounter when he left Midland earlier this summer for Rome.
