Band’s secular success doesn’t blur mission

MIDLAND, TEXAS - Of all the bands appearing at this year’s Rock the Desert festival, Skillet may be the most well known outside of the Christian rock scene.

Although the group’s ascension to fame hardly happened overnight — their first album was released in 1996 — it has been steady, and since the release of 2006’s “Comatose,” Skillet is hot.

Bassist and lead vocalisr John Cooper recently provided a glimpse of what Skillet, scheduled to appear Friday at the RTD festival, has in store for area fans.
