MIDLAND-ODESSA, TEXAS - In West Texas, where football still reigns supreme, the community often views the counter-culture of skateboarding with cautious eyes, and associates it with bad behavior such as teen sex, drugs and crime. But Christian ministry Rock the Desert is out to change those perceptions as it works to grow a positive environment for skaters at its new RTD Skate Park.
“I think that a lot of parents will discourage their kids from skating because when (they) go and start looking at the magazines, you would have to be kind of crazy to let your kid get involved in that,” said Uli Frallicciardi, director of RTD Skate Park. “(Skateboarding) has a bad rap, but here, when (parents) come to this skate park and they see that it’s a clean environment they’ll feel better about it.”
The skate park made its debut this summer at the annual Rock the Desert music festival and opened on Halloween for year-round skating — Tuesday through Saturday each week ...
