Partners Blog: "Meaningful Learning"

Steve and Oddny Gumaer started Partners Relief and Development in response to the needs of refugees and displaced people from Burma, and now in the Middle East, as well. Their mission is to demonstrate, through holistic action, God’s love to children and communities made vulnerable by war in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and other conflict zones.

I decided in the second grade that I wanted to be a teacher. I would get home from school, go to my room, and teach my stuffed animals everything I learned that day. I had attendance sheets, tardy slips, tests, and handouts for each animal (I was an odd child). My love for learning only increased with time. Education has been precious to me as long as I can remember. It was my right as a child to have access to education and it shaped the person I am today. But it wasn’t until I joined Partners that I saw first-hand how my educational experience was vastly different than the Shan people that I love ...
