From @chinaaid : "Churches ordered to host flag-raising ceremony"

The China Aid Association is a non-profit Christian organization - based in Midland, Texas - with a mission to uncover and reveal the truth about religious persecution in China, focusing especially on the unofficial church. They do this, they explain in their website, by exposing the abuses, encouraging the abused and equipping the saints to advance the kingdom of God throughout China.

I WILL NOT FORSAKE THEM
Rev. Ed Hoke
Volunteer, Illinois

“I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them, I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do. I will not forsake them.”
Isaiah 42:16

You need to read the scripture before you read this meditation. I laughed to myself when I read this passage from Isaiah. What made me laugh was reading this passage in the context of our experience in Africa. Being led in “…ways they have not known,” I am lost half the time I’m there. If it weren’t for the Field Officers and Well Supervisors, they would still be looking for me from three years ago. “I will turn the darkness into light…” That would be real nice when you don’t get back before night fall. And then the topper, “…and make the rough places smooth.” Are you kidding me? There is not a smooth spot on any road off the tarmac.

But seriously, everyone who drives in Africa is led to places they have not known. Our Field Officers and Well Supervisors know where they are going and they’ve never gotten me lost, at least for long. Like them, God already knows where we are going. God knows where the wells of our lives are. God has already been there and prepared for our experience of what is in store in that place. And believe me, there you will find the fresh water that will make you never thirst.

As for making rough places smooth, all I can say is that as a veteran of this project, each year the roads get smoother. Really. My first two years, I got irritated by the roughness of the roads. And then during the third year I noticed that I didn’t mind so much. I knew what to expect and had learned to go with the flow. Again, the more we walk with Christ, the more experience we get and the more faith we have, what seemed rough at first only became the normal life of a Christian. I don’t find anywhere in the New Testament where Jesus promises smooth roads. It is just that with Christ in our lives, it doesn’t seem so rough.

Application Question: Where in your life have the rough places seemed smooth because God is present?

Prayer: Oh God, lead us in ways we have not known, make our darknesses light, and make the rough places in our lives seem smooth, simply because You are there, and we will learn to trust You more. Amen.

Where I'll Be NEXT Sunday ...

Contributed Photo
• Our church going on the road for World Communion Sunday

This next Sunday, we will NOT be having our usual worship service at Grace Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas ...

Sunday, October 6, is World Communion Sunday for 2019, and we will be celebrating with our brothers and sisters of the Burmese/Chin congregation at THEIR church - Christian Fellowship Church of Midland (map link), 2707 N. CR 1280, Midland, TX 79707 - this year.

The Fellowship Christian Church of Midland (founded by refugees from Myanmar/Burma) had been a part of Grace Presbyterian, using its facilities for worship, fellowship and more ... until February 2017. It was cause for a gala celebration , as you can see here ...

And it's NOT just for CFCM and Grace Prez ... ALL are welcome!

• What is World Communion Sunday?

"The first Sunday in October is designated as World Communion Sunday, which celebrates our oneness in Christ with all our brothers and sisters around the world. Paul tells us that we are to “discern the body” when we partake of Holy Communion, mindful that we note our relationship to all our brothers and sisters in Christ in the celebration. One is not to go hungry while another is drunk! (I Cor. 11:21). This is scandalous behavior opposed to the Way of Christ. Thus it is appropriate that World Communion Sunday is also a time when we receive the annual Peace and Global Witness Offering as a way of continuing the ancient Christian practice of sharing what we have with brothers and sisters in need ..."

AS ANY HAD NEED
Rev. Suzanne Gorhau
Volunteer and MMM Board Member, Nebraska/Iowa

“All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need.”
Acts 2:44–45

This spring, areas of Nebraska and Iowa where I live were flooded. Entire towns were under water and numerous people lost their homes. At the time same, a cyclone hit Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Over a thousand people died, there was extensive damage from winds and flooding, and many people were displaced. Both disasters happening at the same time reminded me that all of us experience difficulties.

Everyone in my church knew about the flooding in our area because we were living through it, and our friends and neighbors were affected. One of our church members brought our attention to the cyclone in Africa during our prayers in worship. It’s because I’ve told them about my friends in Africa, and now they pay attention to what’s happening in that part of the world. I often say our church is a connectional church. We are connected to one another because we’re all part of the body of Christ. We are sisters and brothers. When one part of the body hurts, we all hurt. We help one another.

One year I was installing wells around Kasungu. I got sick, and my coordinator, Jordan Banda, insisted I go to the hospital. So Maggie, the woman who runs the guest house where I was staying, took me to the hospital, helped me get my medical passport, see a doctor, and get some medicine. I was in need, and she met that need (and also cooked wonderful meals for me).

When we’re in need, God has given us brothers and sisters, and resources, to meet those needs.

Application Question: When was a time when you were in need, and a brother or sister in Christ met that need?

Prayer: Dear Jehovah-Jireh, our Provider, we know there will be times when we’re in need, and it can feel frightening and overwhelming. Remind us that You know what we need before we even ask, and that You are already providing for our needs through our brothers and sisters in Christ. Amen.

LOVE (AGAPE)
Chrispin Mhango
MMM Program Coordinator, Zambia

“And the Son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet.”
Luke 15:21-22

Love is the most powerful, positive emotion a person can experience, and we were all created with basic human need. Yet it is probably the emotion people find the most difficult to truly experience. Some people seemingly lack the capacity to love. It can also be difficult to show affection or concern for individuals from whom we ourselves receive little care. However, God intended that you and I understand love, because it not only influences our own life deeply but also touches those around us.

Agape refers to sacrificial love, the greatest demonstration of which was Jesus Christ paying our deserved sin penalty with His own precious, sinless life.

In Luke 15:11–32, we learn principles about how to express divine love to others who desperately need it, and how its awesome power can impact the people around us. Marion Medical Mission has shown agape love to people in Africa by give out there resources towards safe drinking water program. This is just as the father to the Prodigal Son did by welcoming him without any condition given to the Son.

Let the love lead no matter how it pains.

Application Question: How do you show God’s divine love to others?

Prayer: Lord help us to show your love today as we are going out to meet with our brothers and sister in the field. Amen

The reign and rule of God should be made apparent to every person on the planet, despite their religion, race or socioeconomic status. LISTENING TO GOD'S CALL
Kimberly Richey
MMM Director of Development, Illinois

“Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!”
Matthew 6:8

Business suits & high heels – these were the trappings of my life when MMM blew into my world. Tom & Jocelyn Logan were my childhood Sunday School teachers, so I’ve admired MMM from its earliest beginnings. In summer of 2016, I had absolutely no interest in Africa beyond occasional donations. However, when an email said Tom needed help working with donors, God nagged for a response. Much like Moses arguing with the burning bush, I tried several avoidance tactics, but eventually, I responded. Ill-equipped and unprepared, I forged ahead. A year later, I planned my first trip to Africa. Again, ill-equipped and unprepared, I fell in love with the people of Africa, and my life will never be the same.

Things are so different in Africa. Work is physical, exhausting and dirty. Emotions are ever-present as we’re briefly welcomed into lives which need so much, and yet they share so freely. Faces are transparent and welcoming, loving one another without restriction or judgment. The people are thankful for everything we share with them. They value basic necessities and treasure the smallest gifts. Americans have so much and treasure so little. We protect our hearts, ignoring so many who need love and kindnesses. When I left Africa, I left much of my self behind, and I look at everything differently.

As I prepare for my next trip, I’m still feeling ill-equipped and unprepared – others are going to expect me to help new volunteers navigate the difficult, and sometimes dangerous, world where we work. I still have much to learn. I know there are others who are more experienced and knowledgeable. Really, God, couldn’t I serve somewhere more comfortable? But from the beginning, God has brought me where I needed to be, even before I knew what I needed. I never had this life on my goal posters … but I continue to trust that I’m exactly where I need to be to grow, spiritually and personally.

Application Question: Where is God calling you to step out of your comfort zone and grow?

Prayer: Father, thank You for stretching me and not allowing me to remain the same. Help me to trust Your guidance into uncomfortable places, and to remember that You know what I need, even before I ask. Amen.

WE DO ACTION
Slade Exley
Volunteer, Mississippi

“Dear children, Let us not love with words or tongue, but with ACTION and in truth.”
1 John 3:18

After procrastinating for several days on which verse I wanted to select for this devotion, I finally selected 1 John 3:18, one I felt personified the mission of MMM. Within 30 minutes, I read two articles in the MMM newsletter that spoke directly to this verse.

Betty Samelson expressed the amazement and gratitude of a village leader when “two women from America drove a truck into his village with parts for the well so his people could have clean water. It showed him how much we love his people” (action). “He said the government made promises and didn’t keep them” (words).

Tom Logan’s article expressed the actions we make without words. “Sharing Christ’s love regardless of who they are or their beliefs. Working with the people, going where there are no roads, electric power or means of communication. Not speaking the language or understanding the culture.”

The next day, I passed by a nearby Methodist church that had a sign posted that read “Love isn’t what you say, it’s what you do.”

So what does MMM do? It shows our love of Jesus Christ through our act of providing wells. Our words of love ring hollow with our loved ones if we don’t act like we love them. The same hold true with the people we serve in the mission field. Yes, MMM is truth and love by our actions.

Application: Besides showing up with our team to install each well, what other ac- tions can we take at the well sites to express our love?

Prayer: Gracious God, quiet our lips and strengthen our bodies to act in truth and love to serve those You place in our lives. We ask Your blessings on Marion Medical Mission and the work it performs to provide clean water to our brothers and sisters in Africa. Let our actions during this well season exhibit and express the love of Jesus Christ. In Your Holy name we pray, Amen.
