MIDLAND, TEXAS - When they think about the future, members of the Byamukama Zadoki family have dreams of working and studying in the United States. Mougisa Jimmy Byamukama Zadoki, 23, said Midlanders have helped his Congolese refugee family transition to the area.

“The people are good,” said Mougisa Jimmy, translating for his brother, Isaac Jackson. “Sometimes when we were here, other people (drove) us to the job. They help us at the market.”

The Byamukama Zadokis are part of the population of about 1,400 refugees living in the Tall City. Despite contentious national rhetoric about foreigners entering the country, local refugee organizations have noticed steady support for their efforts to resettle refugees ...
