MINUTE FOR MISSION: FAIR TRADE - A small group of coffee farmers near Boaco, Nicaragua, decided 16 years ago to work together and form a cooperative. “Our neighbors said we were crazy,” says farmer Pedro Cano Rojas.

The farmers had a dream. Despite skepticism within their communities, they stuck with it and worked hard to realize their dream: a democratically run business that would improve the lives of their families and communities. Not only have the founders themselves undergone a conversion experience as their co-op has developed, their neighbors were converted too.

Prayer Requests for Syria

Why I Am Joining With Christians Around The World To Pray For Syria Tomorrow

By Emily F
Open Doors USA Blog

As I walk down the street by my house, I see cars drive by, mothers walking their children to the nearby park and different shops and restaurants open for business. The palm trees are plentiful, shading my little neighborhood from the warm sun that is almost always shinning ...

... In juxtaposition to my own neighborhood, Syria has seen more violence and bloodshed than many of us could ever imagine.

... In the midst of this physical war, Syrian Christians are facing something much darker — a spiritual war. ... there are three ways we can help them.

Plead before the Lord for His mercy on Syria

Staff Report
persecution.org

The church in Syria is experiencing a deep humanitarian crisis that is leading to the rapid loss of hope. In the face of violence and persecution, our brothers and sisters are striving to keep their eyes on the Lord and seeking His face in their country. As the church in Syria is suffering in this war and watching what is happening to their land, they are also seeing that God's hand is at work and only He can bring His redemption to Syria as a nation. Even in pain, suffering, and death, God is using the church to accomplish His plan.

On Saturday May 11, 2013 churches ALL OVER SYRIA will unite in one heart before the Father. They are meeting in their churches, homes and gathering places to send their cries to our Lord. Please join your brothers and sisters on May 11 in prayer and fasting.

MAUMEE VALLEY PRESBYTERY OF MICHIGAN AND OHIO - In John’s account of the feeding of the multitude, Jesus asks Philip, “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” Philip answered, “Six months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little” (6:5b–7). In the life of the church, disciples sometimes cannot see how resources can be stretched to address the hungers of the world.

The 71 congregations in Maumee Valley Presbytery are located in rural, urban, and small-town settings, and range in size from 6 to 980 members. Nine are served by commissioned ruling elders. Teaching elders lead 33 congregations. All have more ministry than resources. All face challenges in meeting the spiritual and physical hungers of the day.

PRESBYTERY OF MACKINAC, OF MICHIGAN AND WISCONSIN - Nestled among cherry orchards and between pristine turquoise blue waters of Lake Michigan and Elk Lake is a lovely little region of northern lower Michigan known as the “cherry capital of the world.” Here, bees are a healthy part of the cherry economy, and fields are full of blossoms during the growing season. But the pews of First Presbyterian Church of Elk Rapids were not so full. Sunday worship was dwindling—turning what might have been an abundant bouquet of churchgoing “flowers” of all ages into mostly a bed of distinguished gray instead.

Faces of Children: Prayer Requests

Faces of Children is an ecumenical prayer ministry under the auspices of First Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas. Our mission is to initiate ministries of prayer for children in churches, communities, and neighborhoods. In doing so, we seek to provide an opportunity for people of God to join together, learn about children and their needs throughout the world, and celebrate Christ's love (especially as it relates to children).

Prayer Concerns for the week of 5/8/13

Canada

• Please keep in prayer nine girls, between ages 13 and 17, who were trafficked into prostitution in Ottawa by three other teenage girls. The victims were lured to a home using social media, given alcohol or drugs to control them, and then taken by taxi to the homes of men who allegedly paid to have sex with them. Pray for the emotional, physical, and spiritual healing of these young victims of sexual exploitation. Pray for justice for these teenage girls ... that those who prostituted or abused them will be held accountable for their actions.

• Pray for the teenage girls, two 15-year-olds and a 16-year-old, who ran this alleged prostitution ring and who now face charges including human trafficking, procuring for prostitution, abduction, forcible confinement, robbery, sexual assault, assault, uttering threats, and printing and publishing child pornography.

• Pray for the four men who allegedly paid to have sex with the trafficked girls...that they will come to truly understand how their behavior devastates young lives.

Haiti

• Continue to keep the estimated 320,000 homeless people close in prayer as they face evictions from their make-shift homes in temporary camps set up in Port-au-Prince after the January 2010 earthquake. Pray for children and families who've been evicted without notice off public spaces by Haitian authorities or private property by landowners ready to reclaim their land.  Pray for an increase in affordable housing in Port-au-Prince-the housing shortage was severe even before the quake with about 70 percent of the population living in slums.

• Pray for the girls and women who prostitute themselves to be able to survive or feed their families. Pray for those who struggle to survive in the camps. Poverty, overcrowding, and horrible living conditions coupled with the scarcity of jobs often compel women and girls to exchange sex for food.

Kenya

• Keep the 38 children and the staff and volunteers at Naomi's Village in prayer as they deal with heavy rains that have caused mudslides near this home for orphaned and at-risk children. Pray the roads leading to Naomi's Village will become passable soon. Please keep in prayer 2-year-old Francis and 7-year-old Jane, the two newest children at Naomi's Village, as they adjust to life in their new home.

• Give God thanks that the CURE International Hospital on the Kijabe mission station didn't sustain structural damage in a mudslide there. Thanks be to God the patients and staff are all safe! Please pray for CURE's staff and volunteers as they assess the impact this mudslide will have on the hospital and the other ministries in which they are involved at the mission station.
  http://tinyurl.com/bpm3ys5

• Pray for those who have lost homes and loved ones in the flooding and mudslides. An estimated 90,000 people have been displaced by the flooding and 62 have died, including children buried alive in landslides. Pray for those who have lost their homes, crops, and livestock. Please pray for those who are stranded and for those without access to food, dry shelter, clean water, and medical care.

• Pray Kenya's government will be able to implement water harvesting and water management during these periods of heavy rain as their country swings between drought and flooding almost every year.
  http://tinyurl.com/c6l6l76

United States

• Please pray for children who are abused and neglected. Pray for the safety and healing of each child abuse victim. Pray they have someone they can turn to in times of crisis or emergency. Pray every child has the opportunity to grow up in a nurturing environment, free from harm and fear. Pray for raised public awareness of child abuse and neglect. Pray more people will step forward when they recognize a situation of child abuse and report it.

• Pray for the women and men who work for child protective organizations around the country as they serve abused and at-risk children and struggling families. Give God thanks they are willing do very challenging and difficult work-investigating situations of abuse and neglect, removing children who have been hurt, working with parents to help them regain custody of their children, and placing children in safe homes. Pray for the safety, emotional health, spiritual wellbeing, and leadership skills of these workers. Pray God will bless them with wisdom in their interactions with children, parents, advocates, and those in the legal system.

Faces of Children
• Please keep Faces of Children prayer partner Margaret close in prayer as she receives treatment for pneumonia. Pray for her complete healing and recovery.

• Please continue to pray that more churches and individuals will join with the ministry of Faces of Children in spreading awareness about children in crisis and inviting more people to pray for children at risk.

If you have prayer requests about children, those who care for them, those who have authority over them, or those who harm them (the really hard prayers to say sometimes), please send them to Chris Laufer, FOC Coordinator, at

Meagan Lee Buck, Reporter
Midland Reporter-Telegram

MIDLAND, TEXAS - Connie Alexander never wanted to write a book. After the retired teacher and her husband, Clayton Alexander, completed a five-year federally funded prison ministry program, she wanted her experiences in Texas prisons to be documented.

"I didn't want to write the book. I kept thinking someone wanted to document our experiences. I kept telling God who I thought should write it and it wasn't me," Connie Alexander said. "I really felt like there needed to be a story that spoke to offer hope and encouragement to the wives and the family of the incarcerated."

PRESBYTERY OF LAKE MICHIGAN - How many loaves have you?” The answer is painfully obvious for a presbytery located in a state that has led the nation in grim statistics in recent years: “not enough.” Even so, disciples in congregations across the Presbytery of Lake Michigan exercise faithful and creative stewardship, and the loaves multiply. In 2011 the presbytery was able to create the Deep and Wide Fund to encourage congregations to reach out to their communities in innovative ways. Efforts have included initiating fellowship opportunities following a new contemporary worship service, a jobs program for adults with special needs, a youth ministry initiative, and an English as a Second Language program for African refugees.

My call was Mbale, Uganda and that is where I have returned to serve for another year. Specifically, I am teaching phonics at Lulwanda Children's Home, an orphanage and school for 90 kids." Natalie also keeps an online journal of her service at the weblog, When He calls me, I will answer ...

Fatuma and Siraji visit my Home in Austin, Texas

One of the highlights of my time in Texas was getting to spend a few days with Fatuma and Siraji in Austin, at my parent's house. For years they have graciously hosted me in their home in Uganda; it was nice to return the gesture.

We had a wonderful fun filled couple of days. Here are the highlight ...

PRESBYTERY OF LAKE HURON, MICHIGAN - The 9,343 congregants within the Presbytery of Lake Huron have heard Jesus say to them, “You give them something to eat.” The people are, in faith and trust in God’s blessing, giving what they have.

Most of the 49 congregations support or operate a local food bank or pantry. The need is so great in one city that a congregation uses all of its mission dollars to support the local food bank. The children of one congregation are confusing and delighting longtime members by bringing, via a little red wagon, the week’s food donations as the tithes and offerings are collected for God’s blessing.

ChinaAid: "The Persecuted church in Xinyuan County of Xinjiang File its Administrative Review Application"

The China Aid Association is a non-profit Christian organization - based in Midland, Texas - with a mission to uncover and reveal the truth about religious persecution in China, focusing especially on the unofficial church. They do this, they explain in their website, by exposing the abuses, encouraging the abused and equipping the saints to advance the kingdom of God throughout China.

The Persecuted church in Xinyuan County of Xinjiang File its Administrative Review Application
Distributed by ChinaAid, April, 2013 ...

XINYUAN, XINJIANG, CHINA – Last month (Sunday March 10, 2013,) a house church in Akeqi Village, Biesituobie Town of Xinyuan County of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region was raided by Xinyuan County Bureau of Religion and the Public Security Bureau. They sealed the gathering site, searched and confiscated a large quantity of church property. They also detained three Christians who were released later that day. On the same day, the Committee for Ethnic and Religious Affairs issued a “Notice of Order for Correction” which ordered the church to “stop illegal religious activities”. The persecuted believers have submitted their administrative reconsideration in accordance with the law.

Seek Conversion
"Jesus challenges us to move in a totally new direction. He asks for conversion-that is to say, a complete interior turnaround, a transformation....Everything within us seems set against this way. And yet-every time we take a few steps along it, we become aware that something new is happening within us and experience a desire to try yet another step forward. And so, step by step, we come closer to the heart of God, which is the heart of an undiscriminating, always-forgiving, inexhaustible love."

Letters to Marc about Jesus
by Henri J.M. Nouwen

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying ...

"Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it. For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it ...

"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of God in heaven. On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name?' Then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; go away from me, you evildoers.'

Matthew 5:1-2; 7:13-14; 21-23
(NRSV)

"God of the Narrow Gate, I am often a creature of convenience-convenience foods, convenient access to roads, convenient TV remote controls, convenient drive-up windows, and convenience stores. I know that these and many other aspects of modern life make it easier for me. Even still, I want things and people to change and adapt for my benefit. Help me to remember that the hard and steep way is the path to your house and that I must practice 'give and take' rather than the 'take and take' of a world revolving around my needs and wants, my pleasures, my way. Amen."

Sparkling Mission

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” Isaiah 9:2

Annie Dieselberg, founder and CEO, heads the staff at NightLight, a ministry in urban Bangkok, Thailand, that reaches out to women and children working in the bar areas of the Nana-Sukhumvit district. Located in a neighborhood with a growing sex trade, Nightlight’s vision is to share the Light of the world in both word and deed to those who live in darkness, and to combat the sexual exploitation of women and children, both Thai and foreign.

Right now, Annie tells us, the greatest need at NightLight is to sell more jewelry. NightLight Design Co., Ltd. is a registered jewellery business which employs women coming out of prostitution or having been at risk of prostitution and/or trafficking.

If you are interested in hosting a jewelry party please write to NightLight, at
jewelry@nightlightinternational.com , and they will assist you in setting that up. NightLight representatives are available for parties and events. If you’d like to host a jewelry party or have a representative at your event, contact Nightlight at that same e-mail link.

Remember the beautiful jewelry is also available on-line at
store.nightlightinternational.com/

"God is going before us to the bars preparing the way. He is sending us to receive the women and give hope," Annie writes. "We ask you to join us in this adventure. Thank you to those of you who already do. You are saving lives!"

PRESBYTERY OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN - Last year Charon A. Barconey, presbytery youth consultant, led youth to accomplish their stated mission: “As youth and adults, we respond to God’s call through the Holy Spirit to be connected to each other, the church, and the world so that our lives proclaim with joy that Jesus Christ is Lord!” Youth of different racial and ethnic backgrounds came together to grow and work in mission. Their work testifies to what people from different backgrounds can accomplish together. The youth served with youth from other states and took mission trips of their own: working at community gardens, food banks, homeless shelters, clean-up projects, and hospitals. Their many experiences helped them build relationships. The success of “Mission Possible” was evident in one of several testimonials. “I love the way the Presbytery of Detroit works together,” a youth from Fourth Presbyterian Church, Chicago, stated. “I want to go home and see how we can connect to other churches in our presbytery.”

In the News ... "Group and spiritual therapy for overeating"

By Lyxan Toledanes
Reporter
Odessa American

ODESSA, TEXAS - As the son and grandson of ministers, you could say it’s in the Rev. R.T. McNeil’s blood to lead a church.

But the longtime minister at St. James Baptist Church didn’t always want a life preaching behind the pulpit.

“It was something far from my mind. I had aspirations (to be) a professional quarterback,” McNeil said.

Though his dreams of playing on the gridiron have long passed, McNeil has accomplished 30 years as the lead pastor of St. James Baptist.

Church members are celebrating the tenure of McNeil and his wife, Amye Lee Jones McNeil, Wednesday through March 11. The celebration will feature pastors from around Texas, McNeil’s sister, gospel singer Rikki McNeil, and the pastor’s son, Timothy McNeil.

Internally Displaced: Talking With The Village Headman

"It would be nearly six hours of human pinball inside the cab of a pickup before we reached our destination. The asphalt had forfeit long ago to rutted mud and what was left of that had choked to a trail impassable any farther by car. Not a minute after the truck doors liberated us, my fellow Karen passengers were spitting Betel nut and watering the nearby trees with a revealing nonchalance. Somehow I had made my way into a dark, soupy puddle deep enough to get the rolled up cuffs of my pants a little wet. Lucky for me, I was still in my sandals. I had brought my boots but they were stowed among all my other jungle toting paraphernalia in back. No one ever tells you how to dress for these things."

PRESBYTERY OF CINCINNATI, OHIO - Bobbie Bella, pastor of Pleasant Run (Ohio) Presbyterian Church, was intrigued by a letter from One Way Farm, a home for abused and abandoned children, that invited churches to offer worship opportunities. The idea attracted her, but she wondered if the congregation could muster enough volunteers. It seemed an impossible venture—that is, until Kevin Murphy, pastor of Northwest Community Church, contacted Bella to see if their congregations could partner in the mission. After extensive training, the two congregations began providing worship, faith conversations, and a meal with the children and staff at One Way Farm.

Word from Uganda: "May 2 ..."

Missionary teacher Natalie Rolfe writes, "'When He calls me, I will answer ... I'll be somewhere working for my Lord.' My call was Mbale, Uganda and that is where I have returned to serve for another year. Specifically, I am teaching phonics at Lulwanda Children's Home, an orphanage and school for 90 kids." Natalie also keeps an online journal of her service at the weblog, When He calls me, I will answer ...

May 2 ...

Six years ago, to the day, I arrived at Lulwanda Children's Home ...

... and my life was forever changed.

SYNOD OF THE COVENANT: MICHIGAN, OHIO - The Mobile Health Fair, a ministry of the Synod of the Covenant, travels throughout Ohio and Michigan to provide health screenings and education to the underserved and uninsured. Participants who require further medical attention are referred to free or low-cost local clinics. Each summer, six college-age students are trained and certified in six medical screenings and educated in over 23 health modules, to serve participants for 10 weeks. As a result of hosting a health fair, churches and volunteers learn to work with community agencies to expand awareness of the healthcare needs in their community. On average, this ministry serves approximately 1,950 participants—referring more than 900 for follow-up care—and works closely with more than 500 volunteers from local congregations.

Prayer Concerns for the week of 5/1/13

Burma

• Please continue to keep Nancy* and the children for whom she cares at Hallelujah Orphanage in Burma held close in prayer. Pray God will provide the resources Nancy and her family need to care for all 11 children (ranging in age from 9 to 18) in their home. Pray God will bring complete healing to Nancy who has been suffering from severe stomach pain for quite some time. Please pray this pain will be relieved soon.

• Pray for the little girl at this orphanage who didn't pass her exam when all the other children passed theirs. Give God thanks these children have the opportunity to attend school and receive an education. Thanks be to God the children are able to attend a special conference at a church near their home where they will learn more about Jesus Christ.

China

• Keep the people of China's Sichuan province close in prayer as they deal with the aftereffects of a powerful 6.6 magnitude earthquake on April 20, 2013. Pray medical and humanitarian assistance will be able to reach the thousands who were injured as many roads in this mountainous region were made impassable by the quake.

• Give thanks to God that no schools collapsed in this quake. In the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that killed more than 70,000 people in May of 2008, many poorly constructed schools collapsed, killing hundreds of students.

• Please pray for the families and friends of those killed in this disaster. Pray God will comfort them and provide them with a community of support and care.

SOUTH AFRICA - In Mark’s account of the feeding of the 5,000, the miracle of plenty is realized in the act of sharing what appear to be meager resources. Four of our partner churches in southern Africa are working together to explore how they can share their gifts with the millions in the region affected by the HIV and AIDS pandemic. Known as the Compassionate Churches Campaign, the initiative invites congregational leaders from the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, the Uniting Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Church of Africa (all in South Africa), and the Lesotho Evangelical Church to take part in workshops that challenge them to recognize the impact of the stigma attached to HIV and AIDS and to develop concrete plans to confront that stigma in their congregations and communities. Each denomination has plans to reach out to more than 100 congregations, and follow-up support will be provided to encourage and support the participants as they return home to implement their plans. PC(USA) World Mission and EMPACT Africa are sponsoring this training.
