MIDLAND, TEXAS - You’re seeing an increasing intolerance in the culture for those who have biblical values,” said the Rev. Jim Denison. “For instance, if you take the pro-life position, you’re now part of a war on women. If you defend the traditional view on marriage, you’re seen as homophobic. … You’re seeing a turn in the culture to believe that religion is irrelevant. It’s left over, outdated, superstitious, mythological.”

The only remedy for such intolerance of religion — or, as Denison described it, a culture that’s becoming “increasingly antagonistic to the Gospel” — is a spiritual awakening spurred by Christians, he said. That’s the purpose of Awake 7:14, an upcoming four-day event that brings together Christians from the Permian Basin to pray for a spiritual awakening in the world.

This year’s Awake 7:14 will be held at 7 p.m. each night Sunday through Wednesday at the Midland Center, 105 N. Main St. The event is free and open to the public. This is the second year it has been held in Midland — last year’s gathering drew upward of 1,000 people each night.
