Partners Blog ... "The Wisdom of Love"

Steve and Oddny Gumaer started Partners Relief and Development in response to the needs of refugees and displaced people from Burma. Their mission is to demonstrate, through holistic action, God’s love to children and communities made vulnerable by war in Burma.

The Wisdom of Love

Lately I have found myself returning to the ideas of the great philosopher, Emanuel Levinas. Born of Jewish descent in Lithuania in 1906, he became a French citizen in 1931 and so, was drafted into the French military at the start of World War II. When Germany invaded France, Levinas and his unit were surrounded and captured. The captives spent the rest of the war at a special prisoner of war camp for Jewish soldiers. This was not at all pleasant. However, not only did Levinas survive the ordeal, but it was in that camp that he wrote the beginnings of an extensive and groundbreaking work in phenomenology (the study of consciousness and experience) in which he presents ethics as an inseparable element of human interaction ...
