From @mmm_water ... 2019 Well Season: Daily Devotional

September 14 - October 28 is Marion Medical Mission Well Season for 2019. The season will include daily devotionals - one for each day the U.S. volunteers are overseas, sharing the love of Jesus by providing safe, clean, sustainable sources of drinking water to the extreme poor in sub-Saharan Africa. Marion Medical Mission is one of our mission partners at Grace Presbyterian Church of Midland, Texas, and we STRONGLY encourage you to read these devotions to learn more about - and pray for! - their mission.

WEEDS IN THE WHEAT FIELD
Richard Ashe
Volunteer, Illinois

When asked what to do about the weeds in the wheat field, so as not to harm the good crop, the Master told the slaves to not pull up the weeds in the wheat field: “Let them both grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, gather the weeds first and bind them together in bundles, to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.”
Matthew 13:30

I am blessed. Blessed to have lived in Kansas and experienced the “amber waves of grain,” as sung in our U.S. National Anthem. You get it when you see it. Breath- taking, the warm wind silently whispering rhythmically across the golden fields of wheat. Magical for me, I think it’s the Holy Spirit dancing across the fields. Awe, but one can invariably find some weeds out in the rippling expanse. Trouble, bad things, evil in the world alongside the good things, what do we do?

Verse 30 tells God’s people (the good seeds) to grow together, despite the evil (the bad seeds) in the field, and the Lord will deal with the weeds later at the harvest.

Installing wells in Africa is one way that we can grow together into a beautiful crop. Providing first-ever lifesaving clean water for people yields many “good seeds.” Such a huge impact and dramatic change upon lives is made when protected water comes flowing out of that well. The screams of absolute pure joy and solemn prayers of appreciation astounds, yet humbles us. It comforts, strengthens, and lifts us all up as we grow together.

Truck swaying, loaded down with pipe, riding across the fields with the Holy Spirit, horn honking, installing wells, singing and dancing, celebrating clean water together as one, being a part of what is right in this world, being blessed.

Application Question: How can you do God’s work and be a good seed wherever you are growing, together with God’s people, despite the weeds in your field of “amber waves of grain?”

Prayer: Lord, help us to grow in your Light, undeterred in reaching up to do your will. Strengthen us so that together we may produce a bountiful crop; God’s people who will, verse 43 “… Shine like the Sun in our Father’s Kingdom …”
