Today in the PC-USA Mission Yearbook

The Mission Yearbook for Prayer and Study is a daily devotional with 365 inspiring mission stories that come from next door and all across the globe. It inspires thousands of Presbyterians daily as they uphold the mission of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in intercessory prayer. The stories in the 2013 Mission Yearbook were gathered around the question of Jesus to his disciples, “How many loaves have you?” from Mark 6:38. The book is filled with stories of God’s abundance in the face of overwhelming needs and a scarcity of resources.

IRAQ - Through the continuing cycles of violence and destruction following the 2003 war, there is the “still, small voice” of the church. Though two Presbyterian churches have had to close because danger and intimidation have driven away their members, the story of five faithful Presbyterian communities—in Mosul, Kirkuk, Baghdad, and Basrah—continues. It is the story of an elder kidnapped from his home and martyred. It is the story of bombs planted outside a church’s gate and, thankfully, discovered. It is a story of families separated when children are sent abroad for safety’s sake or refugee protocols take some family members but not others. It is a story of numbers—of a church of 750 families that now has 250, of Iraqi pastors driven away so that only one remains.
