In the News ... "MPD Officers Suspended for Competition To Take Signs From Panhandlers, Not Logging Evidence"

MIDLAND, TEXAS - Two Midland Police officers were suspended for three days after officials learned about a competition to see who could collect the most signs from panhandlers.

The internal investigation also found improper logging of evidence, including a set of illegal brass knuckles that were confiscated and never logged.

It was good journalism on the part of The Midland Reporter-Telegram that uncovered the November suspension, spurred by a complaint by fellow Officer Jaren Speck.

And for those who work closely with the homeless population, the game to nab signs from panhandlers comes as quite a shock.
