MIDLAND, TEXAS - It’s a typical Wednesday morning at Area Missions Outreach Services, a local food and clothing ministry on the south side of Midland. Volunteers Mae Spencer and Nancy Dakil sort through a large box stuffed with donated clothing, toys and household items. People trickle in and out of the small building; some volunteers, some dropping off donations and others seeking aid.

At the center of it all, Maria Rodriguez greets everyone with a warm smile, frequently ducking into the food pantry or sorting room to help volunteers. They call her the executive director, but as the ministry’s only employee, she wears many hats.

Area Missions Outreach Services, or AMOS, is a faith-based nonprofit started in 1988 to provide food, clothing, household items, health screenings and other services for Midland County residents in need. The ministry helps anyone from the low-income, elderly and disabled to those who have simply fallen on hard times.
