FPC-Midland Belize Mission: Taking It to the Next Level

From  January 11, 2014, a team  from 1st Presbyterian Church-Midland will be traveling to the Central American country of Belize, and working with The Word at Work ministry. This will be an opportunity to reach out and share the gospel with the people of Belize while working side-by-side with the local community and The Word at Work staff on a much-needed construction project.

Taking It to the Next Level

An exciting day on the worksite, helping the community of El Progresso build La Iglesia Casa de Alabanza. The last courses of block-and-mortar have been placed on the walls, and the cut-and-shaped rebar assemblies have been laid. In stages, wall by wall, foot by foot, those braces are being framed and cement is being poured.

It is the end of the walls ... or the start of the roof ... or both. Take your pick.

There's a saying about the effect of "many willing hands," and that's being proven true here. We've had a good-size crew of workers throughout the week, and there are more on the site today, with fresh faces, fresh energy. Bear in mind, we are not really here to build the church, but to connect with the people of El Progresso and help them as they build the church ... and their community.

That's one of the neat things about The Word At Work ... establishing partnerships, providing the means to connect visitors such as ourselves with local, established ministries such as La Iglesia Casa de Alabanza. When everything is done - when the roof is raised, the inside and outside wall surfaces finished, the interior furnished and the doors opened - the members our our team will be some of the MANY who will have had a hand in building this church ... the mission teams who were here before us, the teams who will follow, The Word At Work staff and their donors, and - most of all - the people of El Progresso.

Going back to an earlier post ... there of  was a steady rain overnight, but none has fallen today ... so far, at least. Later this afternoon, we will take a break from construction work, and begin cleaning up the worksite for this evening's Movie Night. We're hoping today's respite from the rain will continue through the evening and allow us to greet the community, share some food and some fellowship, and enjoy a movie under the stars.

Follow-up ... as I'm typing this, it just got a little brighter, as if the overcast is giving way ... just a little ...and the sun is tryi ng to break through ... just a little ...
