FPC-Midland Belize Mission: Stories and Music at EPGS

From  January 11, 2014, a team  from 1st Presbyterian Church-Midland will be traveling to the Central American country of Belize, and working with The Word at Work ministry. This will be an opportunity to reach out and share the gospel with the people of Belize while working side-by-side with the local community and The Word at Work staff on a much-needed construction project.

Stories and Music at EPGS

All of the activities that are part of our mission in Belize have a purpose and a genuine value, responding to a need, an opportunity to serve.

But some of the activities can be a LOT more fun than others - for us and for those we serve. One of those fun activities ... morning gatherings with the students at El Progresso Government School (EPGS). These gatherings are held in the classrooms with the permission and participation of the teachers. Each gathering is less than half-an-hour (we do not want to take away too much time that might be devoted to regular instruction), and our team visits two of the classrooms each day. By the end of the week, the team will have visited all of the classes at EPGS.

There is music and singing (led by Karen), and readings from a children's book devoted to stories from the Bible, read by Mayra in Spanish for the youngest grade, in English and Spanish for the next grade up, and in English for the older grades. One day, it might be story of Noah's Ark ... another day, it might be Feeding the Multitude with a Few Loaves & Fishes.

There is more music, then some prayer, then some more music. By the end of the gathering, we hope that each and every student knows that or she is a child of God.

The gatherings also offer an opportunity for our team to visit with school faculty and the principal, to learn about their school, its challenges and its achievements, its place in the community and its contribution to the future.

A number of these students have been passing the worksite on their way to and from school, and stopping to watch ... and sometimes visiting an older sibling or parent at work on the site.

Please keep El Progresso Government School in your prayers. They would like to expand one of the rooms of the existing building, to house a 'proper' library, and they would like to make more computer resources available to more students.  And as I posted before, pray that the students are encouraged as they begin the new year. And lift up the faculty and staff, some of whom go to great lengths, sometimes under challenging circumstances in order to get to work each day.
