• Christmas goes around the world

MIDLAND/ODESSA, TEXAS - There is an obvious benefit to sending shoeboxes full of Christmas gifts to 10 million children in 90 countries, but leaders of the program say the real value is that it is unquantifiable.

Packing boxes for their annual drive Monday through Nov. 24, Permian Basin workers in Operation Christmas Child are using Sherwood Baptist Church at 505 E. 42nd St., in Odessa and Stonegate Fellowship at 6000 W. Wadley Ave., in Midland as collection centers.

Each shoebox is designated for a girl or a boy, wrapped in Christmas paper and packed with things like hard candy, small cars, dolls, stuffed animals, yo-yos, Slinkies, jump ropes, personal hygiene items and basic necessities like shoes, socks and pencils, organizers say ...
